Subject: Favourite Novel in the Space Marine Battles Series.
Battle of the fang has to be my favorite and catechism of hate wasn't half bad either. But IMHO Architect of Fate was really bad, the Imperial Fist story was ok, but the rest was awful.
Architect of Fate is just not as good as the rest in my opinion. I'm a sucker for Black Library books and I've read all of the Battles series. I enjoyed most to varying degress but personally I loved Rynn's World and Fall of Damnos more than the rest. Also thought The Gildar Rift was quite good, better than I was expecting. Also thought Legion of The Damned and Purging of Kadillus were both good reads. I didn't enjoy Helsreach or Architect of Fate, don't know why but I just couldn't get into them.

Admittedly I've only read the Battle of the Fang in the Battles series, but I was pleasantly surprised with it. I expected it to be just generic bolter porn... and, well, it was. But that does it a disservice - it was top-notch bolter porn with tons of epic moments. However, my opinion of it is soured by the last 100 pages, which really were a massive letdown from the awesome build-up it had been accumulating.
Spoiler:
Although admittedly, the bit with Magnus was cool, but to get to it, they had to cast away everything the story was building itself up to be. For example, at least a half dozen characters died ignominiously and the novel came to a pretty weak conclusion which, while "realistic" or "grimdark", doesn't really make for a great story... maybe if it had only been 1 or 2, but the sheer amount of failed potential was really sad considering how well the story had broken the bolter porn stigma up until that point.
While it sounds like I hate the Battle of the Fang, I certainly didn't... I just really didn't like the last 100 pages, because the preceding 200 were awesome.
