So here is what happened.

I have a friend who plays demons. He took skull taker and placed him on a chariot.

When he charged into combat he wanted to issue a challenge. I asked him to read me what the chariot did for his character. When he got out his book and read me the entry for the chariot. It gives him stat bonuses and at the end says he loses the independent character rule. Obviously from 5th Ed to prevent him from joining units. But by question is if he isn't a character then I don't believe he can challenge. Obviously skull taker wants to challenge and take heads!

So I looked in the BRB and it refers to chariots as vehicles which skull takers is not. So there were no answers there.

Basically if you didn't take any unit champion type models and you had skull taker on a chariot as your general then you would have an army with zero characters!

What happens for slay the warlord? Is he still the warlord? What about his warlord trait? Can he challenge? Is that legal army as he still is the required HQ choice? Does it matter?

He should still be a character if his unit type is: Infantry (Character).

The fact that he looses the Independent Character rule just means he can no longer join a unit.

So his unit type would not be a chariot because its the chariot from the demon book?

He would be Unit Type Chariot if he is actually riding the chariot, but he would still be a character. (Not sure if the rules in the C:CSM make him hop onto a vehicle or if it is just an upgrade).

He would not be an Independent character and he would be the warlord, because he is still a character.

So chariot (character)?

Looks like. I need to reread the relevent rules to be sure though.

It doesn't say in the chaos demon book either that it changes his unit type. So maybe he remains infantry? In the bak if the brb it doesn't list chariot of khorne a unit type....

Quick clarification: The chariot upgrade for Skully in CD is just a stats boost, not the unit type "Chariot" right? I believe only Crons and Hellflayers are chariots at the moment.

Correct; the only listed changes to Skulltaker from the Chariot are stat bonuses. So his unit type would not change at all, and in the codex it is listed as being Infantry. The "Chariot" of Khorne is not actually a Chariot at all, that's just the name of the upgrade! It is not a Chariot Vehicle, nor does it make Skulltaker any sort of vehicle. The only changes made to Skulltaker by the Chariot upgrade are: stat boosts, and loss of the IC USR.

In the rulebook, it lists Heralds of Khorne as being unit type: "Infantry (Character)." I'm inclined to think that Skulltaker is subject to the same unit type classification, because he is, after all, just a special Herald of Khorne. Therefore, when he takes the Chariot of Khorne upgrade, he remains Infantry (Character) as stated in the rulebook, but loses the Independent Character USR and all attendant abilities (such as joining other units). IC is not itself a unit type, but simply a special rule, so losing it doesn't take away his character status.

All Special characters are characters - given in the rulebook and the FAQ for the BRB
