Say you use "Comet of casandora" from the lore of the heavens.

It goes off and strikes a unit with a character in it and causes 6 hits which cause 4 wounds.

How are these hits/wounds distributed in the unit? (How many go on rank and file troops, how many go on the character?)

The spell does not specify "as per shooting" or "every model in the unit must take X" like some other spells.

I have the same question about any spell that causes a random number of hits on a unit but does not specify how they should be distributed.

It depends on the size of the unit. If there are at least 5 rank+file guys in the unit, then hits all go on the unit. If its a small unit/taken casualties, and there are less than 5, then hits have to be distributed as evenly as possible.

If the unit is 5+ models before the character, the character is safe.

If it is 5 models total, each model takes a single hit in the order you wish, and then the next batch of hits are distributed,

So if you have 5 models and 8 hits, you could allocate 1 wound to the character and one other model, and the other 3 models would get 2 hits against them. If there are 10 hits against those 5 models, each one must take 2 hits.

Then you roll to wound against each model. Characters often have higher T than their units, so roll all the wounds for the unit and then roll the wounds for the character separately.

If you had 5 men including a character and 9 hits, the character only has to take 1 of them.

Does this method of wound allocation also apply to spells like the number 6 shadow spell? I think that spell says something like, "All models under the template..." So if a character is under the template in a unit of 20 models, is the character "sniped" by the template or does that hit that would have gone on him go on rank and file models instead?

If its a templete weapon and the character is in the unit of 5 or more rank and file (not including the champion), the character gets a LOS roll. (provided his is the same unit type).
