This is sort of two art wt part two is not possible if the first part is wrong but
Part one: I was told by a friend that this warcaster isn't technically a unit, and thus doesn't have to activate together. i.e. I could activate just one of the three do some stuff, activate a warjack then go back and activate another one of the three witches. Is this true?
Part two: if part one is true then can I Cast Infernal machine (an Upkeep spell) on one Jack, activate that one, then go back and cast the same spell on another jack through a different witch. The way I read the rules it says you can't have two instances of an upkeep spell active at a time but it doesn't state you can't cast the spell multiple times

The Coven of Gharlast, or however that's spelled, is NOT a unit. It is a card containing four otherwise independent solo models. That's why it has to have that whole card of special rules. :-)
You activate Whats-her-name. Then do something. Finish her activation. Do whatever you want here with some other models. Then activate That-other-one. Then do something. Do whatever you want here, again. Then finish her activation. Then activate Her-other-there. Then do something. Then finish her activation. Then do some more stuff here.
As far as casting the same upkeep spell multiple times, the rules tell you what happens: The first upkeep spell expires immediately and then the second instance takes effect.

Solkan has it right. They can also add in the Deathjack and a skarlock for extra casting of the spells.

Awesome and Fantastic. I was reading the rules on the upkeep spell correctly then just my friends were getting me confused when they said you "can't cast the same upkeep spells multiple times" they were probably saying that as there normaly wouldn't be a point to it as the first would immediately expire before you had a chance to make any use of it.

Bingo. For an example of a spell that cannot be cast multiple times look at Mortenebra's Overrun. Though she comes with a character Skarlock the spell states "can only be cast once per turn."

During my brief stint with the Witch Coven, I took great joy in the ability to run the Egregore, and use one of the other witches to cast the feat. Since it is centered on the Egregore, you can get some nice range.

GW Rules Interpretation Syndrom. GWRIS. Causes people to second guess a rule in a book because that's what they would have had to do in a GW system.
