In order to save money I was thinking of good models to get to convert into 40k vehicles. I am also trying to get into Bolt Action. Seeing as how they are both the same scale, and the design of a T34/85 and a Chimera look very similar. I was thinking of makingT-34/58 tank "into" a chimera

I mean the basic tank profile looks very similar.

T-34/85

Chimera

But now I realize just do both. I mean I could build a Bolt action army, with very generic pant schemes, and refrain from using Cyrillic/Red banners. I mean the Valhallan Guard was inspired by the WW2 Soviets. The models could pass for each other...

Any though, ideas, and constructive comments would be helpful.

I would definitely clear this with your bolt action group. 40k people generally won't mind, but with Bolt Action, a historical game, people will notice russians running around with chainswords and laser rifles. Since most historical gamers play historical games to be, you know, historical, things like chimeras will stick out like a sore thumb. There's also the problem of scale.

Check out a Bolt Action T 34. It's roughly half the size of a 40k chimera, which will be your biggest (no pun intended) problem. The infantry however are both roughly the same size and proportions, so they should be fine.

If you're wanting to make an army that can easily switch between the two, I would ask your 40k group if they're ok with you using Bolt Action Russians (they have a 40 man plastic kit coming out for like $40 soon, and it's got an insane amount of options) You can use regular riflemen as your lasguns, and then convert a few guys up with meltaguns, plasma, and other weapons for 40k games. You'll end up needing a few models that can only be used in one game or the other (your IG heavy weapons and special weapons, your russian SMG's and antitank guns/tanks for bolt action) but it'd still be much cheaper than buying GW and Bolt Action armies entirely seperately.

Otherwise, I just don't see it working. I play IG and bolt action as well, and I plan on doing something similar someday when I eventually start a Russian Army.

Maybe play 40k with the bolt action stuff, representing maybe a different or lower tech imperial guard regiment. Panzers in 40k is okay sometimes, but chimeras with WW2 guys? Nah

I was going to use the Russian models and the ones with special/heavy weapons (MGs etc) by painting the ring around the base a certain color. So that the color would represent what they would have for 40k. For example if they have a PPSH. They would get a blue ring around the to represent them being a plasma gunner, or something to those lines

As for the part in green:
I would just let the Russians use guns and say that they are "auto rifles" or just really crappy looking lasguns. I would just give the Sargent a shovel/Loudspeaker, and count it a ccw

Ah ok, saw all the valhallan models and thought you were going to try to use them in Bolt Action.

I would still try and give your dedicated 40k guys with plasma, melta, etc the actual weapon, simply as a common courtesy to your opponent. You wouldn't need a ton of guys to do this (10-15 dedicated melta/plasma guys tops, and that would be for a larger IG force) and it just makes it easier for everyone else. Having your opponent trying to remember that a ppsh 41 is a melta gun and yet the other submachine gun is a plasma gun will just cause unnecessary confusion.

I'm sure no one would object to your guard units being armed with bolt action riffles due to their being from an industrial world.

Historical gamers however will probably object to lasguns and chainswords.

I'd probably try and use the polish army that Warlord games produces now, since they have "Lancers", which could double as Rough riders.
