So I started painting GW miniatures a few months back, mainly done lizardmen so far but wanted to do a space marine for fun. I really like highlighting and trying out different ligh sources. This is my first attempt at OSL. I'm thinking the different light sources are a sun above the space marine and the lava below.

Not sure the sun reflection works imo, but the lava glow is awsome.
Edit: And the blending is very well done.

The lava OSL is very good. It looks realistic and properly done. Good job.
The sunlight lighting is off...think about if you walk outside...and have a lightbulb inbetween your legs...the color of the bulb will be the light give off from below (your lava) but the light from the sun will not make you look yellow. To illustrate OSL from the sun all you need to do is utilize proper highlighting techniques and you will be good to go

Good suggestion, I think I went a bit over the top with highlighting the light from the sun like you said. Will try to shade it over with a really watered down red to remove the "yellowness".

Interesting work here!
Could I ask, as an amateur painter, how did you make the base?
Thanks for sharing mate!

Yea the sun reflection wouldnt be as solid. Unless something is polished to ridiculous levels, it usually just adds a few shades higher not THAT high.
The lava one is spot-on though.

Nice job. Especially the blending with the orange is well done.
There couple things I'd like to point out. First osl looks better if the mini you are trying to do osl on is darker. You picked red as base color which is pretty bright color. I would have gone for grey, black or dark blue.
Second there is no osl on the base. It's fairly odd that the ground next to lave isn't lit up when the marine is bathing in light.
In my oppinion the sun osl just doesn't work.
If you are interested I added some osl to my ork Kommandoes which you can see here:

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

I just used a standard base and sculpted some lava+rock edges from green stuff, fairly simple stuff!

Thanks for the feedback! I went witha red color since I thought it would be easier to blend with the yellow light. As for the base, I pretty much just forgot about the osl on the base.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's an update btw, removed the brighest orange parts from the space marine:
