Idea for a Portable Table Concept

(I'm not sure if this is the right forum or not. Please advise.)

I have an idea for building a portable 4' x 6' gaming table. Let me lay it out.

Start with a canvas top that is 4' x 6'. On the playing surface, model, layer, texture, paint to flavor. On the under side, sew in pockets in 2' x 2' segments (for a total of six 2' x 2' segments). Cut six 2' x 2' segments of something light weight but solid (something like press board, maybe 1/8" thick). Insert the segments into the pockets to use. Remove the segments and fold up the canvas to store and transport.

It should be able to sit flat on a table with minimum dimensions of 3' x 4'.

An alternate for stability sitting on a smaller table, would be sew the pockets in 2' x 4' segments (for a total of three 2' x 4' segments). Still cut six 2' x 2' segments of press board. Use duck tape to tape two of the 2' x 2' segments together (leaving just larger than 1/8" gap between the segments under the tape so that the segments will fold along the tape line and stack on each other). Repeat this step so you have three 2' x 4' taped segments (each individually comprised of two 2' x 2' segments). Then insert the three taped segments into the pockets.

Has anyone ever tried an idea like this?

Two problems:

1) Every time you roll/unroll it you're going to destroy the paint.

2) You still need a frame to support it, otherwise it will bend at the gap between pockets of rigid material. So once you have a table frame you aren't really saving much space.

If you want a portable table just build it in 2x2 tiles and put it on your kitchen table/folding table/whatever. It takes up slightly more space, but is a much better way of doing it.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
