Subject: Some space wolves modelling and tactics questions

Hi guys, a few questions if anyone could help me out:
1. How many grey hunters with wolf standard models have been produced over the years? I want 3 in my army but would not want 2 of the same model
2. Does anybody think the chooser of the slain is worth while getting?
3. In 6th edition, do people recommend storm bolsters or combi meltas on wolf guard terms that will pod in?
4. I want a cyclone missile launcher WG to lead a squad of gh - I can't decide what to arm him with though, power fist with storm shield or power fist and storm bolster. Any advice for someone particularly regarding how he would fair in challenges v de and chaos marines?
5. Can the wolf standard be used during the opponents assault phase, and can it therefore be used to refill 1's when you are shooting and wounding with over watch? I can't see why not but it seems pretty unbelievable for 10 points
6. Are there any common ways of converting wolf standard grey hunters using parts from bitz websites?
Thanks brothers!

I've heard that people who decide to play Space Wolves are a bit beardy?

Am I jumping the gun, Baldrick, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation? |

And this (if it actually has any grounding at all) has anything to do with the OP how?
Anyway, back on topic.
1. Easy to kit bash with the normal space wolves kit (chop off axe head, stick on backpack banner etc) just be creative.
2. Never used it to great extent, doesn't require modeling though so give it a go as ymmv.
3. Depends what you want them for but I'd say if you have the points combi anything over the storm bolters.
4. See 3, storm shield is probably over the top for leading grey hunters...
5. It does work for overwatch ( FAQ'ed), it is very good for 10 points.
6. See 1.
Cheers,
David.

Cheers Niiai,
I get the feeling you dont like storm bolters....
I just thought with overwatch and with the rest of the unit not having assault weapons it would be a couple of extra shots as I charge in.
Bit dissappointed about the wolf standard, I'll check the FAQs later

1) There are 2. There's the old metal one and the new Helmetless Finecast one. I built most of mine using the standard bearer arms from SM Command boxes.
2) The Chooser of the Slain is huge. It allows you to dictate where your opponent Infiltrates, often forcing units to Outflank or deploy normally instead.
3) I went with Storm bolters when I built mine, though the next batch will probably be a mix of combi-flamers and combi-meltas.
4) I went cheap on my CML Wolf Guard with power axes and storm bolters. Then again, they don't lead my Grey Hunters. My Grey Hunters are led by Chainfist/Storm Bolter Wolf Guard.
5) The Wolf Standard is generally used in the Shooting Phase, because if you activate it in the assault phase, it takes effect in the next assault phase rather than the current one. However, for the assault phase that it is active, it does let you reroll overwatch fire hits and wounds, armor saves against overwatch fire, and all the stuff involved with the Fight Subphase. Really, the only thing it doesn't help with is assault distance and Leadership.
6) See #1.
Oh, and welcome aboard.

Also, it's a bolter, not a bolster.

1 - I just used the small icons that fit ontop of backpacks for my wolf standards. Since they are the only models in my whole army that uses them, its never been a problem and is quite obvious what they are supposed to be for.
2 - I always take 1. Giving your rune prists an effective BS5 is great for LL and it helps control an area where the other guy can't surprise you.
3 - depends totally one what you want the guys to do? But if you have the points for it, a one shot melta never hurt when you can take them in mass.
4 - I'd give him a power axe and nothing else. You want him shooting not in assault, and if he does get challenged, since he has termi armor he has a good chance at living against other sarges that are not desinged for HTH. If they are designed for HTH he wasn't going to live anyway. The axe will let you wound most things on a 2+/3+ and they will have to hope for an inv save.
5 - Wolf standard effects happen during the entire assault phase, any die rolls taken during the assault phase may bennifit from the standard. However, you must say you are using it at the end of the current turns shooting phase. Once the assault phase starts, its effects would skip the current phase and activate on the next assault phase down the line.
6 - See #1

What others have said, I just use the backbanners that you get in the Space Wolves box and other Space Marine kits.
mikeyboyj wrote:2. Does anybody think the chooser of the slain is worth while getting?
I don't bother, but it is worthwhile, yes.
mikeyboyj wrote:3. In 6th edition, do people recommend storm bolsters or combi meltas on wolf guard terms that will pod in?
Combi-meltas, they're worth the +5pts especially if you're podding.
mikeyboyj wrote:4. I want a cyclone missile launcher WG to lead a squad of gh - I can't decide what to arm him with though, power fist with storm shield or power fist and storm bolster. Any advice for someone particularly regarding how he would fair in challenges v de and chaos marines?
If you want him in challenges, go for the Shield + Fist or a Wolf Claw. There's a good chance he could take the DE or Chaos Marines, but only if he has some luck and weathers their attacks.

That's what they say. The only problem is remembering to activate it.
