Definitely better than 3rd (more variety, better gear, more tactical options than "march forward and shoot")
I think 6th is slightly better than 5th. The buffs to shooting makes the necrons slightly more killy, and there are now actual rules for flyers.

3rd edition necrons were a bear. I remember them being far more dangerous than even now, although obviously the army was a tad bit boring. With that said the current Necron book fits its game system as well as any army list for any game. Almost every unit has great synergy with one aspect of 6th rules or the other. Right now they are one of the top 2-3 armies out there and its going to be hard seeing another army supplanting them. Being the only army with a dedicated transport flyer will do that.

I took Necrons in 3rd, they went through everything put against them like a hot knife through butter.
I wasn't a competitive player, they just played so well in that edition. Flayed ones had a giant presence in some of my builds.
4th through to the release of 6th the meta had changed fairly substantially. They still rocked though.

In 5th necrons were mid tier not bad but not GK by any means, thats why i chose to revive them i wanted a balanced codex to play, and i hadnt used them since 2005 when i stopped playing because the stoke GW manager was a dick and stopped vetran nights and specialist games.
Then matt ward released 6th and my balanced army suddenly became hard as nails almost over night but i'd already bought my new models so there was no way to go back.
My necrons are a CC army though using wraiths and praetorians with a necron destroyer lord to ruin peoples day, as i figure its a way to counter the armies OPness by playing the armies weakness instead of its strength.

Necrons in 6th are ridiculous because of the change to flyers, and they have one of the best in the business. While it doesn't seem as good as a vendetta at first glance, the twin linked nature of the tesla gun make it a bit ridiculous. It can spawn a total of 12 str 7 hits. 6-8 aren't that uncommon.
Vendetta gets a max 3, and usually more like 2. And vendetta isn't a dedicated transport.

I use just 1 doomscythe for countering other flyers and poping tanks, i'd never do flyer spam i dont think i could look myself in the mirror.

Necrons in 6e are stronger than GK ever were in 5e.
And Necrons in 5e were also top-tier army, 6e just came before large audience understood how good they actually were.
Other thing is that people don't seem to understand how good Tesla weapons are: Tesla special rule = multiply shots by 1.5.
This means Tesla Destructor is equivalent to 3 autocannons, except that it doesn't have to stay still to fire them.
