I have been a wargamer for many years (I have lost more years and money into the hobby than I care to remember, but I am still hooked so it is not a bad thing at all), and have steered away from Games Workshop for a number of years, mainly due to the price hikes they insist on every year or so.
So when I came across the Games Workshop channel and videos on Youtube, I watched a few in the hope that they were trying to redeem themselves.
Sadly, I was mistaken.
Rather than using the opportunity (Like Flames of War for example) of having a "Tutorial" (or in FoW terms "Bootcamp") so new players can learn the rules in a nice, fun and relaxed way, maybe with a few models and throwing some dice themselves to get a feel for the game structure, breakdown of how the turns pan out, special rules etc, they instead flood the channel with promo's about ranges that will be a bit hype which there is a reason for them (I.E LotR/The Hobbit ranges (I will genuinly be amazed if the Hobbit ranges are still selling well after the final Hobbit movie is released) and "movies" of slow turning miniatures and some music... that's it. No voice overs explaining the units or characters, how they work in your army, strengths, weaknesses...nothing. Just a slow turning mini and some music.
Games Workshop is meant to be one of the largest companies in wargaming and miniatures; stores worldwide and employing hundreds of staff ... Can they really not use some media to their advantage to get a new customer base? Or are thry simply hoping the look of a model or two is enough to entise people into the stores now?
**** Please understand, this is not a rant or a flame topic at Games Workshop, their ranges, staff or customers. This is simply my views and pure frustration that they had a great thing a number of years ago, but for me, due to a number of small issues building up, and now the seeming lack of "assisting" new players with tactical tips, overlooked things, rule supplements or tutorials... Will they remain one of the largest in the world? ****
Am I just a moaner? Or does anyone else agree?
Cheers.
