Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Hail! It's nice to finally be a part of Dakka Dakka, and I pray it's alright I combine one of my first posts with a few questions.

I've looked around and noticed outstanding hobbyists on this website, who hopefully share my interests in the genre. I've been in the hobby ever since my friend approached me, one morning in a large lodge we were visiting, and using an older laptop we "borrowed" from another friend, browsed one of many the Warhammer 40k wiki's. He read to me the lore, and he and I became deeply embedded in the hobby. I remember looking at the hobby at first and I was like "It's cool but, probably not my thing...", and... here I am, in love with it... but, I digress. Of course, I grew older, and joined the military academy portion of the high-school and we lost touch later this year after I moved, or rather do not hang out as much as we used to.

Unfortunately, I live in the middle-of-no-where Virginia, and as such the nearest hobby-shop is 30 miles away, so there is not a soul nearby who has interest in the hobby. It's not the largest either, but has good meaning with paints. (Not going to be a prude and bash it, I'm glad we have one within 50 miles as is, and the guy is also on Dakka Dakka.) I've noticed it's also very hard to talk to others about the hobby as no one expects someone like I, a jock/jarhead to be in it due to the whole "Living in your mothers basement" trope. As such, even my family members mock it a bit, but do not say much as they know I'm joining the U.S Navy in four months. As such, gas is costly and the actual supplies are too.

Speaking of my friend, there is hope. Our interests are mutual but, split. He opted for the Angels of Ecstasy, while I am a stoic Space Marine supporter. I'm looking to build a very small 750 point army, to verse his.

I suppose I should elaborate what I wish to create. I'm looking to start a Knights of the Blood army, the renegade force, not to be confused with the Knights of Blood chaos. (Loose fluff end I believe.) Now, with the economy and the way Games Workshop prices things, it's a bit harder to find time for paints while i'm still in high-school. To be concise, the current paints I have at my disposal Badab black (Wash), Leadbelcher (Base), Abaddon Black (Base), Khorne Red (Base), Blood Red (Colour), Chainmail (Colour), Burnished Gold (Colour), Calthan Brown (Base), Undercoat black, Skull White (Colour), Regal Blue(Colour), and lastly, Mordian Blue (Foundation).

I was thinking of using a 2:1 ratio of Leadbelcher and Abaddon black for starters, then Khorne Red for the shoulders, later coming in for detail work on the figure with Chainmail and Burnished gold. For highlights representing light, I would use Calthan brown mixed with Blood Red, applied on the red Shoulders and Helmet. Thoughts? Should I pick up a few more paints?

As for the little army I have... it's a mess. I have a Stormraven, a few sergeants, a poorly painted captain and Black Templar squad, that I liberated from Ebay, which needs the paint removed. After melting a poor squad of Ultrasmurfs in acetone two years ago, I'm scared to attempt removing the paint.

As for Warhammer 40k in General, I hope to write for FFG and Black Library someday, as I am a freelance writer and concept artist. Thank you for taking the time to read this introduction by the way.

Thanks. Bit nervous painting my first army, as if I botch it, it's my wallet that eats it, you know?

Yeah, just I got into the hobby roughly two years ago, in 2011. It's only picked up as now really, and I love it, but I am unsure if the painting is for me and the gameplay isn't... always easy to understand when you only play maybe twice a year.

I'm mostly in it for freelance work for FFG or Black Library, which I'm slowly preparing for as writing is my strong suit.

But, to stay concise and stellar, I'm worried these first models will look like absolute garbage. I have two tactical squads, in terrible condition as they are secondhand ebay squads, a small bitzbox of shoulders etc, and a open-box Stormraven that has an ultramarine forgeworld door. I already listed all the paints I own.

However, I may practice tonight on some of the less stellar models I have, as I've friends who wish for me to make them a marine or two.

Speaking of, here's what I have to work with. A mixed bits box, a Stormraven, and a "tactical" squad that's seen better days, that I had liberated from ebay for a small sum, plus a hand-me-down Captain. As for the Ultramarines... they melted in the fires of acetone.

[EDIT] Forgot to mention the Chapterhouse extension kit I have...

Ya those marines will need some work. just take your time and you'll be find. And the thing I've found with painting is keep your paint wet and use light coats

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

Thanks guys for the welcome.

By the way, started my first miniature today. (Not counting those poor Ultramarine sods who melted in holy promethium- I mean, the fluff of Matt Wa- Ahem, Acetone.)

Only been on Dakka for a short while now, and it's been a sincere blast. Anyways, yet again, thank you for the strong welcome.

Cheers.
