You could try using the red glaze to help with blending? Maybe using that and Wazdakka could be your solution as the glaze helps to tie all the reds together.

I saw a video on YT that refers to a type of paint called 'Candy'. It's not Citadel, but it is a really nice translucent red. It looks gorgeous on the Blood angels I saw being painted. I'm going to track some down for when I start my KB's. Look into it, it might be just what you're looking for.

In terms of what GW offer, I'm just starting out with the new paints. Only managed to use the Khorne red so far, which I love. Been using it for the DV cultist auto pistols.

The new reds cover well? That's fantastic news, actually (I haven't tried the new line, yet, but that's all I can get locally, as far as hobby-specific ranges go). Blood Red wasn't meant to be translucent, it was just weakly pigmented. Adding a bit of water/matte medium to the closest color in the new line should give you similar results. Lowering opacity is easy - it's when you want it raised that you have to look for a new paint.
