Has anyone used the games workshop paint gun on here and how well does it actually work on painting warhammer minis or if it is not very well can someone suggest a decent one that is easy to operate for a beginner that will paint good with in a good price range?

The spray gun is held in fairly low regard around here. It's only really good for basecoats, and Army Painter's primers are held in much higher in people's books (they also come in a variety of colours). I haven't used them though, so I can't say whether they're for you.

Everyone says it is all right for priming and basic spraying but no use for detail work.

If you want to do finer work you need a double action airbrush with a compressor.

On eBay there are usually kits for about $100 or so. Here is a set with two brushes and a spray gun.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-3-Airbrush-Kit-6-Primary-Colors-Air-Compressor-Dual-Action-Createx-Hobby-Set-/200882038096?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec580a550&_uhb=1

They are cheap brands but would be fine for getting used to the techniques involved, and it won't matter if you mess up the equipment.

You can upgrade later to a better outfit if you like the method. A high end outfit could set you back $500 to $1,000 dollars and you won't get any better results unless you are experienced.

OK thanks i'm severely glad that I asked I came very closer to picking up the citadel air brush at a local hobby shop but had second thoughts and decided to ask around first because I am a beginner but want one I can do detail painting too I don't want one I can only prime with.

If you want to do detail work you'll need an airbrush, and to use that you'll need an air compressor. So it can be a pretty big investment.

Save yourself some cash - don't touch the GW air gun with a barge pole!

You can buy any generic Chinese replica airbrush for less money and have better results, do some googles about airbrushing before you make a purchase, but for heaven sake, leave the GW brush to collect dust in their store...

Snake-eyes, everybody wins!! Oh, no, wait, my bad.. Oops..

SInce you are in the USA, see if you have a Micheal arts and crafts store near you. They have just started to carry Badger products and have the Badger 350. This the airbrush the GW gun wants to be. It runs about 50 bucks and had very thing but the air source is include to get you started, which you can get a large air can for about $13.

If you have never used an Airbrush before, I would recommend this as a starter set. It is single action, external mix (fancy airbrush talk for works like spray paint, can handle heavier paint like GW better, easy to clean, easy to learn how to use) type airbrush that you can get spare parts for. The Badger will also always be a good brush for doing basecoats even after you graduate to the dual action, internal mix brushes (the ones you can do all the fancy airbrush tricks with).

Hobby Lobby also sales a simple starter brush by Paasche, another good brush company for about 25 bucks. Same deal as the Badger, not quite as good quality.

In this case you are going to want to graduate to a dual action pretty early. I still recommend the 350 as a starter so you can learn how to handle and maintain an air brush before you sink money into one the of the $100+ airbrushes.

Hello mate! this is a common question people seem to ask. Now for someone who is starting off in the hobby you might wanna pick this up if you don't wanna have to do with compressors and all that fun stuff! "keep in mind you are very limited with what you can do with it, only can really prime"

And the cans are very expensive. If I was you I'd just save a few extra bucks and pick up a

It's a clone of a very expensive Iwata AIrbrush that seems to be the craze!

now these two products, are not in USA but if you go on the USA based Ebay store you should be able to find the same by searching for the model numbers.

If you still cannot make your mind up about, it look at some videos.

The GW airbrush is good for beginners, and could probably do SOME detail (but not to any extreme), but otherwise is not very good.

Upsides:

-Cheap for an airbrush
-Good to learn the basics

Downsides:

-Not good for much past basecoats and simple highlights
-Cheap
-Need to replace it with a better airbrush after you've learned the basics

airbrush threads here are common about every other week (I am being 100% serious).

Do a quick search, you will find a huge amount of information.

Here is an executive summary:

Get a gravity fed double action internal mix airbrush.
Get a cheap compressor.

Watch awesomepaintjob.com on youtube.

best of luck!

Your "upsides" are, well... wrong. The GW spray gun is a single action siphon fed brush and is not that cheap for an airbrush, as there dual action gravity fed brushes that are WAY better and cheaper. As far as "learning the basics," the GW spray gun will teach you how to pull a trigger and spray a bunch of paint... That is nothing close to what you see done on YouTube and other places.
In short, it is an overpriced, poorly constructed plastic spray paint can. "Oh, but it looks like a flamer!"... So what? My airbrush looks like an airbrush and works like one too.

I say it's cheap because it's 33 dollars, but a good airbrush can be $100+. By the basics, I mean how an airbrush puts paint on a model, not any sort of true detail work or anything. I'm not comparing what it does to what you see on Youtube, because those people are better painters and are using better equipment. Most of them know the ropes already, but as an airbrush beginner you need to know how an airbrush works. That's why I said it's good for "the basics," as in seeing how the airbrush works.

The brush is terrible and over priced.

Even THIS $20 brush is better.

Do not buy this terrible piece of junk;

Read the dozens of airbrush threads here...

Wait, there are cheap airbrushes that are actually GOOD? Holy crap, I need to get a new apartment now just so I can buy one!

I don't really use an airbrush, so that's why I said it was "good for beginners." It was okay for me when I used it, but because of where I live I never bothered to get anything better. It's just collecting dust now.

I do airbrush and I have brushes that range from $20 to $100+ and every single one is better than the GW gun. Still, the fact that remains that it is not a good place to start for beginners because it doesn't behave like the brushes we use. Not every painter on YouTube uses top of the line equipment just like not all of use do either. As a matter of fact, the brush I used the before my current nice one cost $24 on Amazon and it worked like a champ; it is still #2 on my airbrush holder too.

I'm very tempted to get an airbrush now, but living in an apartment does not help at all. Especially when you have roommates, and you have boxes everywhere. I was okay with the GW gun be cause it was small and didn't need a lot of space, and getting the gubbins for a good one did not appeal to me.

In anycase, I've been proven wrong, and the general consensus is: DON'T BUY THE GW GUN.

Somewhere in south-central England.

A compressor is only the size of two or three bricks. It's like a two-slice toaster, if you have those in the USA.

http://www.johnlewis.com/231825515/Product.aspx

The brushes are all basically the same size because they have to fit in the human hand.

The main problem will be overspray and smell, so you should get a large cardboard box for a spray booth -- can't do too much about the smell unfortunately, but it won't be that bad if you use acrylics.
