I have been out of the hobby for awhile, took a break because I couldn't really decide what I wanted to play and it seemed when I made a choice there would be an outbreak of that exact army at my local game store and it really pissed me off. I have a thing with following others, I like to be unique. So in the months leading up to my return to the game I have been toying around with the idea of creating my own space marine chapter, I want to create their very own back story, fluff, campaigns, names and all that. Basically I want something that when I show up to a game at my local game store it will be impossible for someone to have the exact same army as me. With all that said I am turning to you, the forum goers for help, I have no idea where to start with this project. I want to build the fluff, back story, and all that detail work before I even purchase a model and start painting. I am looking for advice or if anyone has any good articles on this subject that I should read that would be awesome, I am looking for any and all help and it will all be greatly appreciated. And I want to just stop talking and put a thank you out there for anyone that does help me.

What exactly are you asking for? I would say find a chapter you like and then make a chapter that has splintered from them or something like that. That way you will have something solid to start from.

Edit: You could also check out the lexicanum or warhammer 40k wiki, I found some interesting background through those sites.

For some good examples of space marine background articles I would advise you to look at some old index astartes articles and the 2 Badab War books from fw.

For story ideas, just read. Anything and everything, fiction, non-fiction, newspapers, novels. You never know where you might find a story hook that you think is cool.

So what are you asking for then? It sounds like you're just asking "how do I have an idea?", not a question anyone can help you with.

I think he's asking where to start. Which still seems a bit odd.

Just figure out their style. Then figure out how you want to paint them. Then you can fill the rest in with your own fluff until it's a chapter.

Zero imagination required. You may need this too. And probably a pen and some paper.
