Cutting the anecdotes and starting straight with the question. When levelling up in Pathfinder, one gets to pick between a +1 Skill Rank or +1 Hit Point (for favoured class). Conflicting sources and ambiguity have confused me; is this bonus a permanent modifier to the hit die, or is it simply a +1 to total health points?

For example, a character going from level 1 to level 2 in their favoured class. They roll their hit die and choose +1 HP for levelling their favoured class. Does this mean that their hit die is now "dX + 1", or just that this one time they get one health point? As in, a level 10 character could potentially have a +10 modifier to their hit die, meaning that levelling from 10 to 11 would be "dX +10".

The former (that it is a modifier) could be true, due to how small an increase of 1 health point is. The latter (that it is a one-time additional health point and nothing more) just feels more correct, somehow. I think that a one-off is probably more likely, but I'm quite unsure.

It's a 1 time hit point. Say that guy was a fighter who went from 13 HP to 22HP, and he decided to take an extra HP for the favored class. He'd now have 23 hit points.
