I was thinking of picking up two epic armies to have small two player battles here at home with a friend. Nothing serious just a bit of fun. Is there anything I need to know before getting started? I dont really know anything about the game yet but im hoping it will be easy enough to pick up. Any random advice?

Download the rules for free from GW web site before they're gone. You can get Space Marine, Ork, and Guard armies fairly cheap on eBay. Guard is the more forgiving army to learn with. Space Marines less so.
Try to balance out the number of units in your army with their size. There are disadvantages to having fewer large units as well as many small ones.

Umm, does knowing that GW is cutting support to the game products count as something you need to know?
If so, then yes, GW isn't making any more Epic miniatures; if it's gone from the store, it's gone indefinitely.

To be fair, GW sold barely any of the old Epic range. Most Epic stuff has been bought second hand for years now.

If you have problems sourcing GW models, you can buy models from other 6mm producers, such as the Exodus Wars ranged. A lot of their stuff seems made as potential Epic proxies.
Also you'll need to have a think about which version you want to play - As well as the most recent version (which you can get off the GW store still) there's still a lot of love for 2nd Edition (subtitled Space Marine), and you can get that in the guise of NetEpic (a fan-revised rulebook which updates a lot fo the armies with units from later editions/40k).

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.” |

It seems GW still have some models for sale online at this time. Although some of the pricing is questionable for their size....£12 for 6 rhinos no bigger than a fingernail hmmm..
How big of an army do you need? and also i cant seem to find any rules or army build lists for chaos or is it what you see in the basic set is what you get? what about the chaos rhinos or landraiders, wheres all the meat!

Most Epic stuff GW sells is still available. Forge World stuff is harder to come by. Getting enough Tau together will be expensive. Space Marines not as much.
