Tough Traitorous Guardsman

Looking for a book that includes chaos forces who behave in a borderline sane non cartoonish way and behave in a manner befitting a functional military unit.. Read the Storm of Iron series, Word Bearers, Talos Night Lords series, thinking about the hunt for valdoris because the Alpha legion is new to me. I like Guerilla warfare partly due my heritage and would love to here about an insurgency waged against the Imperium by anyone else besides foul Xenos. Not at all interested in the Tau collaborator book coming out. Really like mortal followers of the dark gods

Like the great storm of the Horus Heresy, the forces of the True Gods will descend upon the Emperor's minions. The stars will tremble at their passage and the mighty armadas of the Warmaster Abaddon will bring annihilation to a hundred worlds. Know this, for these things will come to pass. |

I liked and also know many people who would recommend Battle Of The Fang. It has the SW perspective as well but Magnus is so cool as always.

Loved the Blood Gorgans, Honsou was great in the first book but by the time of the skull harvest he was more like the Joker of 40k. Interested in the thousand sons but have the feeling its going to be to magical as opposed the grim scifi horror stuff I like. I'm a fan of horror movies military history.

I enjoyed the Siege of Castellax from mostly the Iron Warrior perspective. The intrigue between them in the middle of an Ork WAAAGH! and action against the Orks makes it a pretty good read imo.

Castellax was good except for the cartoonish evil and contempt the iron warriors dislplayed towards their vassals. Strutting around like their going to be a replacement for the human species which I find strange considering they need human infants and that the Iron Warriors gene seed is devolving. Instead I would have liked them recalling the glories of the great crusade when fighting orks and how the Imperium of man has gone soft when dealing with Xenos.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden has a new series coming about the Black Legion. Might want to keep an eye out for that. Although the Black Legion tends to be the worst offenders of the cartoonish sterotype, Bowden has a gift for taking ridiculous concepts and writing them in a realistic and believable manner.

Pawns of Chaos is about innocent chaos worshippers living peacefully on a planet that gets invaded by the evil forces of the Imperium. It's a pretty old book so I dunno if it's still in print but it's definitely what you're looking for.

Would recommend against Hunt for Voldorius, I just found it kind of mediocre and hard to get invested in.
Some of my favorite Chaos books have been in the HH series, Horus Rising and The First Heretic. Although those may not be what you are looking for, since much of the story takes place pre-fall-to-Chaos.

If you can find it, the Liber Chaotica books are awesome source books for anything chaos related. Though written from a WHFB point-of-view, they contain mostly universal chaos related info, and even some small tracts relating to 40k.
The big problem with this though is finding this book. It's OOP now, and used copies can reach 3-400 U.S. dollars on amazon...

The big hardback compendium of Liber Chaotica sitting on my bookshelf has little sections about the 40k versions of the gods. They are pretty much the same, but the sections mention things like noise marines and such.

Yeah, it can be found, but like I said, the good copies reach upwards of $200 for what Amazon ranks as an 'acceptable' copy. Personally I wouldn't want to spend that much for a book that may or may not be in good condition.

One thing that always bothers me. Online book prices. What. The. Hell.
I mean your bog-standard mass market paperback reaching £100 plus (easily) for used copies, just because they're oop for like a year. Then you've got hardbacks going for hundreds and hundreds of pounds/dollars. Who in their right minds thinks that they're worth that kind of money? Do they really expect sales!?!?
Seriously. What the hell.

The later Gaunt's Ghosts books have lots of involvement of the Blood Pact, and most of them show plenty of Chaos military activity, not Chaos Marines though.
