Everyone already knows that these are a pain in the you know what to play against, and I am pretty sure they know they are not so easy to paint, either!

As I was standing in the tournament check-in line at Adepticon, I could hear people discussing the painting of Hell Drakes each time the line moved past a board with one (or three!) of them on it.

Here are a few images of one that I painted. I think I posted some WIP images of this on the blog showing how many individual parts I painted before glueing them all together. It had to be at least 20.

Very nice. It's great looking models that lessen the blow of seeing them just kill swathes of your own in a game.

Thanks for sharing. Very unique design techniques and phenomenal highlighting on the metal.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

That is one awesome looking drake!

Still not sure I like the model but the paintwork is fantastic.

I have not played against chaos in this edition. Are drakes as bad as I have heard?

They are brutal. I have played against just one of these, and it wiped out a huge chunk of the army all by itself. No real weaknesses, and not a lot of points. Does just about everything as well.

And that's when there was only one!

I have a standing bet with my gaming buddy that if I scratch built a few more of these to make three, those 3 Drakes alone could wipe out most of my 1850 point DE army.

Very, very, very nice work. I have never even liked the Helldrake model, but seeing yours makes me realize how they can look when done well.

Colour me quite impressed!

The job you did on this amazing. How many hours do you think you put into this?

This had to be at least 60-70 hours of painting. Painting both sides of the wings was quite an adventure! There was one wing which I "lost track" of and didn't notice that one of the sides was only about 40% painted. I was right in the processs of gluing it on when I did notice!

The golds are usually done by putting down a layer of yellow ochre, which I lighten with a yellow-white, all the way to the lightest highlights. After that, I shade and tint the colors darker with a series of glazes. There are a number of articles on the blog that show step by step metals... golds, etc. I think the grey knight and demonhunter posts have lots of gold in them

The model is painted really well.

However, I think the pigment streaks you have done on the wing detract from the overall look of the model. To me they are really distracting.

They are just a bit to uniform, I dunno, they like I said just really stand out and are distracting.

In case you have not noticed, Raging Heroes has that kickstarter that is coming soon. Boatloads of IG that are not the usual GW guys. Here is a little sample of the Kurganova Sisters...
