I'm piecing together my necron army right now as I traded for a bunch of stuff on here. I'm toying with the idea of buying and running 3 AB, how are they? For 90 points they seem boss, but do they hold up or are they quickly dispersed? Main opponents wil be tau and orks. I'm aiming to do a all shooting army.
Currently have:
1 destroyer lord
3 destroyers
40 warriors
8 immortals
2 crypteks
Around 10-15 scarabs.
Lords, overlord, and ghost arcs are in the future too.
Also, is it possible to create a competitive list without going cheese and running 10 scythes?

Annihilation barges are probably the best buy in the codex. They are extremely effective. 3 in the heavy support slot is a pretty staple build for competitive list.
You also don't need 10 scythes to be effective. 4 is generally the max you want to bring, and will usually dominate the air.

Hah 10 was being sarcastic lol. I guess just don't want to be THAT guy if I don't have to. If its possible to run a list without them I would refer to

There is no reason not to run one or two. People have adapted to flyers now, as nearly everyone has one available, and can take an Aegis line.
Wraiths are also a very very good unit to be paired with a Destroyer Lord.

Is the space pope reptilian? Of course.
90pts gets you a TL-Tesla destructor on a mobile and survivable AV13 platform. Not much else to say if you can't see the value in that.

Probably the best buy, both cost wise and money wise in the Necron codex. Tesla is just amazing, and double amazing at STR 7.

You think AP- is going to be crap but it still seems to drop marines every turn. And it is quite difficult to kill with a 5+ cover and AP13

Buy the barges.. you will also get a spare Lord out of them.
And Catacomb command barges are pretty good if you dont glue the gun down you can easily swap it out for said lord without having to magnetize.
Ghost arcs are decent against Tau if you take 3 but everything else smashes them too easily IMO

Decisions decisions. Part of me says barges for the sheer power to point ratio. Other side says arcs to help give my 40 warriors a chance against armies like tau where ill more than likely get shot to hell and back.
Ab seem smart for the orks as they'll be coming to me really and will probably run a kan wall... Hmmm

You do realize you are asking if a unit that by all standards is freaking OP is "worth it"?
Seriously, its up there with wraiths and scythes in the "absurdly undercosted" section of the necron codex.

I apologize if my question seems to be dumb, I have been out of the hobby a long time and have not played a single game of 6th edition... Just trying to get some friendly advise... Automatically Appended Next Post: With that being said... My 40k 6th edition rule book doesn't come on until the end of this week so I don't even know what hull points are... Lol... Like I said, it's been a loooong time hah

Well, I probably allowed my anger on these damn things blasting through my army get the best of me.
So, as a general note.
They are freaking strong, if they would cost 120 points a piece, I would still advise you to get at least two.

Hello Krudd and welcome to 6th edition.
As an opponent of Necrons more time than I care to be I can tell you from experience that the AB is a pain in the @$$ when in groups of two or three. Since the range is 24 inches and you are not a fast skimmer I can deploy and move to mitigate the Necron first turn AB shooting unless I am going first that is. The A Barge is the first thing I will shoot at and even if I only get the pen to drop the quantum shield so ot is now av11 that is enough for me as I can follow up with other units. At under 100 points I do feel it is undercosted for an AV13 twin linked additional hit on sixes vehicle. The ability to have it arc onto units within 6 inches is annoying to say the least and you can make your opponent pay dearly for not spacing their units properly, especially heavy weapons teams. As the others have said, get them and don't look back.
|
Less crying, more playing. Trust me, you'll feel better in the end. |

I have played the Necrons since the new codex dropped, and let me tell you, more often than not I have 3 Annihilation Barges as my first choice when writing a list. I have tried every other heavy in the codex, and they are all great (yes, even the doomsday ark and monolith), but nothing consistently impacts the battles I play as much as fielding those Anny Barges.
Snap Shooting is almost a non-issue with the Tesla cannon, so they are easily able to move 12" a turn and fire with good success. They are tremendous Anti-Air for the same reason. I have, on several separate occasions, blown vendettas and heldrakes out of the sky with a little luck using only Anny Barges.
They are by no means the end all be all of the Necron Heavy Selection, but I believe that you can never go wrong with 3 of those babies in your list. Not to mention the model is good and at a fairly solid price, comparatively.
Seriously they are riflemen dreadnoughts, but better an almost every single way.... and > 20 points cheaper (depending on codex). AMAZING.

A decision you will not regret.
I recommend experimenting with the command barge a bit too. Most people don't seem to like it in 6th, but I have had some great luck with it and haven't ever regretted taking it.

Annihilation barges are outstanding value for what they bring. the number of S7 hits they can generate, combined with the arc rule means they can tear chunks out of hordes, massacre MEQ's and seriously threaten low-mid AV vehicles.
The icing on the cake is that the Command barge is the same model, and if you don't glue on the tesla gun, you can switch and chage as and when you like, and if you buy 3 barges, you get 3 overlords (or lords) into the bargain.
The command barge isn't as good as it used to be, but it is a chariot, and it has the ability to engage 3 enemy units a turn. Move over one and do a sweep attack, the overlord can use a shooting weapon if he has one, say a tachyon arrow if you have it. the barge shoots a second unit, and then you can assault as well.
Ghost arcs are a very very useful unit, and they certainly complement a silver horde style list. the AV13 they get is a very tough nut to crack, especially in quantity, and the repair barge rule means you can use multiple barges to repair a single unit each turn. so if you have a unit of 20 warriors, while they cannot embark on the barge, they will usually have 50% of casualties get back up (gotta love res orbs) and if you take 3 arks, then you will replace 3-9 warriors. its quite something to see a unit of 20 warriors get knocked down to 25% strength in your oponents turn, and then be back to full strength in your own. you do need multiples though, because while a single AV13 vehicle isn't that hard to take out, multiples are. and it gets much worse for your opponent if you include 3 ghost arks, 3 annihilation barges AND some command barges and have a massive AV13 wall on your side

Just to jump on the bandwagon but yah they are SUPER effective. Hey bring huge amounts of str 6/7 shooting, don't really lose effectiveness even when snapshotting(12" move for a better shot or flyer killing), and they're cheap enough that for the cost of 3 of them, your talking about a singular thing from another codex usually to bring equivalent shooting.
I've been running 3 in almost every list that doesn't include scarabs/spyders or a doom scythe. You can take 3 at a 1000 points and not really sacrifice anything in the rest of your list.
