I'm sure this has been answered somewhere else already, but I couldn't find a thread, so here goes.

In the CSM codex it states that your Lord or squad's champion may "take wargear from the Ranged Weapons and Melee Weapons lists". Not the exact words, but very similar.

Now, there are probably other rules preventing this which I haven't read yet, but doesn't that technically mean that my Champ or Lord may pack a rocket launcher or plasma gun? They are in the Ranged Weapons list, after all.

Check the 'Ranged Weapons' and 'Melee Weapons' lists on page 91 of the Codex.

Are they in the Ranged Weapons / Melee Weapons Lists on page 91? You should probably read the rules immediately under the page header.

I haven't got mu codex here, but I'm fairly certain Missile Launchers and Plasma Guns are not on the Ranged Weapons list. You should probably double check this.

If I recall correctly, the options on the Ranged Weapons list are: Combibolter (3pts), combi-flamer/Melta/Plasma (10pts), Plasma Pistol (15pts).

Indeed, it isn't just a list of all weapons but a select few that are available to you. It is also within this list that you will find the cost for each weapon, which does still have to be paid, and further limitations that you need to keep an eye on. These limitations are normally 'one weapon for one' but also include such lines as 'can take one of each of the following' and the all around 'select one of the following.'

I would like you to also head over to the game workshop website and take a good look at the FAQ/errata for the chaos space marines. There where some errors made in the wargear section of many entries. These errors would actually prevent you from being able to meet the above mentioned limitations to purchase certain combination of war-gear because they forgot to give simple things like starting bolt pistols or mention a dedicated close combat weapon.

Well, there is a Ranged Weapons list on p. 65, and that was the one that got me confused. Forgot about p. 91. Sorry for wasting your time and thanks.
