Hi guys.

Never been too good at painting anything, so am expecting a wave of flames regarding my first ever attempt at painting.
I know its not the best but would appreciate any advice on any further steps I could take to turn it into a more acceptable example. Its still a work in progress.

Hormagaunt-

Its the general colours I want to use. I've already started on a 'fex and few others, which have all been done to the same kind of standard.

Constructive criticism welcome.....

Some highlights or drybrushing, along with painting or flocking the base will really help it pop.

Highlights would set the model off. Maybe do the talon the same color as the hove on the fex.

I wouldn't just wash everything black. It just makes the colors look dirty, and not in a realistic or good way. Wash greys, dark blues, or metallics black, but generally you should try washing with appropriate colors. So I might keep the black wash for the chitin, but the pink parts of the model should probably be washed in a red or purple. These will still give the color depth, but also look more realistic and less muddy.

I used to paint bids and the best way I found for skin was just a wash over a white undercoat. I used to use sepia wash to give an orange tinge to the skin but I'm sure you could just make a wash out of the colour you have been using for the skin. Just try it and see what it looks like as it may save you a lot of time and effort for the sake of 1 test model

Thanks for the replies guys.
The 'fex was a model, already assembled and painted (pretty badly) that I got off eBay for £6.
Think I might be repainting everything at this rate. Thanks again for the advice, will be applying it when I get some new paints (was using enamels, will try and get GW equivalents and use washes as James suggests.)

That looks great to me for a first go.

First thing negative I notice about it, would be the over spill of your pink onto his skin. Work on painting clean lines before getting to fancy. If you cant stay in the lines, then you'll never be able to do highlights that look good.

Good Luck!
