So me and another player are in an argument right now about something. We are going to play a 2v2 game soon and he says that the alliance chart (battle-brothers, Desperate allies, etc.) give no bonuses in a 2v2 game. I think that they do. who is right?

Long live the Chaos Space Marines!!!

Neither. The rules do not cover 2v2 games and as such, you will need to house rule how allies work.

How I've played it is each player considers their partners army to be Allies of Convenience, regardless of what the Matrix says.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

That is up to the players to decide. The rules for this is not included in 2v2 unless one player wants allies for him self.

^ Also what happyjew said.

The way that makes the most sense is if 1 teammate has an Allied detachment, and both teammates have the same Primary, then the Allies should benefit both teammates' Primary detachments in the same manner as a 1 on 1 game.

Also, it should be such that the 2 players on one team make up an army, thus there can only be 1 Abaddon per army, but each team member gets its own complete FOC, or double FOC if 2000 points or more. Or you could also do it such that a single team gets a single FOC, or 1 double FOC if 2k. That's more flexible I'd say.

What strikes me as particularly odd about this, is the word "bonuses". The alliance chart does not give bonuses. It gives penalties and restrictions. I would certainly be inclined to at a minimum apply those restrictions in a 2v2 game. As others have noted, 2v2 is stepping outside the normal rules anyway, so you pretty much have to decide what you're going to do.

I personally would think that you count your partner as AoC, and both players treat any allied detachments according to the matrix

Really its up to the TO or any equivalent body at the shop.

Just bring up the question fairly and they will probably rule in a way that works for everyone. They my even spin it into a cool themed battle or something that explains why these two armies are fighting together against the other side.

If there isn't anyone like that available, or the TO is playing and doesn't think he can be impartial, just discuss it with the players there and make sure everything is laid on the table. As long as you don't hide your goals or try and be super cheesy with the setup (unless they are okay with that), you should come to an agreement.

To make it easier for Doubles games we are using all team mates as Desperate allies, so even 'Nids get to ally, and making people roll off in the first game to see who is the Warlord for the combined force.

The local GW has a Double-header every year...
All Ally charts rules apply (I played with an Ethreal hiding in some TAQ... )
But they had a side rule.. can't have the same faction twice in an alliance.. (except for 'Nids since they can't ally)
Not saying it's a great rule (Nor Globally accepted) ... but hey some solid GW(ish) rules to start you off on

2k (lotsa spiders) 3k (lotsa LR's)
Why are basic Guardians BS4 when firewarriors train from birth? Cause by the time your best warriors die of old age Eldar haven't even been laid!!

We also disallow same codex for doubles, as it just often results in one 1500 point (for example) "Split" into 2 750 point armies. Much more fun to make people think about how their armies fit together!

The official GW 2x2 events make both players share an FOC, so you have to play with someone who has an army you can actually ally with. It also means that levels of alliance (BB, Aoc, DA) still apply.

If you both want to play the same army, that's fine too, just ignore the allied matrix and split as normal. And you're only allowed one Fortification between you.

They don't, however, make you split the points evenly...

I play a few armies:
Forces of Order: Grey Knights & Eldar
Forces of Disorder: Dark Eldar
Forces of 'we don't care, we're just going to eat you anyway': Tyranids

NEW!! For 2014: Deadzone, 40k RPG: Rogue Trader, XWing and Dreadball!

Also went in for Rampage with the DBX KS.
