Heya all, not im not really an apoc player, dont think i ever will be but when i saw the new Obelisk i thought "hurray, they finally updated the monolith model, mabye now i can justify buying one!"

but alas my dreams were dashed when i found out it was the obelisk, a totally different beastie.

now what i want to do is run the Obelisk as a Monolith, from eyeballing the photos they look roughly the same size, i would just mount it very low on the flying base (1 inch of the base maybe).

the only issue i see is that the obelisk doesn't have a portal, i plan on using the portal of the night scythe or just telling my oponent what side the "portal" is on and using my imagination!!

now are there any issues i haven't thought about? would you object to playing against an obelisk being used as a monolith? are they of comparable size? whats your opinion on me doing this?

There is a very slight height difference (i think about an inch or so).
Honestly, I'd play you with that substitute. Not everyone is a stickler over WYSIWYG, so I wouldnt worry about using it as a substitution.
It should be pretty easy to make portals on each side if you want to. I don't think they are necessary: space marines just appear on the board through teleporters, so why not necrons?

yeah that could work, i would have to identify what sides the portals are on,any ideas on how to do that? any ideas for what to use as a portal if i wanted to make one??

coolest thing about it too is if you assemble it "closed" as you seem to be planning you can convert the Ctan up in to your own shard!

My bro has just bought one to go alongside his 3 monoliths and boost his Nec army up to over 4000 points !

Now he's never built such a large model and wanted me to build it (I have 2 baneblades amongst other big things) and I can confirm that the obelisk is practically identical in terms of dimensions compared with a monolith. Your best bet is to do what I did and not glue on the flying base or the 'corners', as they are sturdy enough to hold without glue and the model can be assembled as either an obelisk OR a teserract vault c'tan thing. Really I would not suggest putting the obelisk on the flying base at all as it would stand out with the extra height. I use it without the flying base (I only use the base when assembled as the massive teserract), and without the base the obelisk is only around 1cm bigger than a monolith so would work much better for counts as.

The only thing I don't really understand is why you would want to pay £95 for a model to count it as a monolith :p

as long as its not flying and in closed mode though id play against it.
