I'm thinking of making a list for my Tau army using Commander Farsight and Commander Shadowsun. I'm going to be using Farsight's blob from the main codex with Shadowsun, Longstrike, 2 squads of 12 Fire Warriors in Devilfish, and a Riptide. I'm wondering if anyone can make up a good story behind why Farsight and Shadowsun are working together?

It's explained within the newest Tau Codex itself that Farsight and Shadowsun fought together on numerous occasions before his ascendancy to Shas'O. They were rivals, constantly seeking to one-up each other and gain Puretide's approval.

So, that can be your backstory.

Only problem is that the riptide was not invented until Farsight had been on the other side of the galazy for 2 centuries and shadowsun had been in cryo sleep.
