If you're up to it.

I challenge you to create a competitive 1850 Tyranid list without the use of the Doom, Brainleech Devourers, and Tervigons.

I am not saying it's got to blow the competition away...but you'd have to feel comfortable playing a stranger with it.

This is really just an exercise to see what other unit tactics we can come up with currently.

Let the ideas flow forth!

Are you up to the challenge?

I'll do this at 2k points.

No, my name is taken from the most excellent of commanders: Lord Castellan Creed, of the Imperial Guar- I mean Astra Militarum - who has a special rule known only as "Tactical Genius"... Although nowhere near as awesome as before, it now allows some cool stuff for the Guar- Astra Militarum - player. FEAR ME AND MY TWO WARLORD TRAITS.

I do not like this...

But, fine. Here we go:

Flyrant: Hive Commander, Toxin sacs, LW/BS, ST
Flyrant: Toxin sacks, LW/BS, ST
Ymgarl Genestealers x7
Ymgarl Genestealers x8
3 Zoanthropes in a Pod
20 Devourer Gants in a Pod
19 Devourer Gants in a Pod
10 gants
3 Ripper Swarms
Bastion with Comms Relay
3 Biovores

Ok, start the game with Rippers on top of Bastion (which should be way the heck back in your DZ out of melta range of anything). Rippers dont need IB in the bastion, and run the comms Relay and can't be seen as they're shorter than the walls. Pray he doesn't have Barrage weapons! 3 Biovores go inside the Bastion, shooting out the front for craps and giggles. Both Flyrants start the game behind the Bastion and have a 3+ cover from the fortification. Stay still turn 1, or fly off the board turn 1.

Turn 2, DROWN YOUR ENEMIES IN RESERVING PAIN! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Quick Question: when you say no brainleech, is that only on flyrants?

Ok this is almost exactly what I was gonna do so I'm not gonna bother.

I don't really play Tyranids, so who knows if this is good at all. Actual Tyranid players should adjust this to be efficient.

With the seeming reduction of S8 stuff, Warriors don't seem too incredibly awful. Let's just put 18 of them on the table.

Swarmlord w/ 2 Tyrant Guard
Hive Tyrant w/ Armored Shell, LW/BS/ST

2 x 9 Warriors w/ RC/ST + BS
30 Gants w/ Toxin Sacs
30 Gargoyles w/ Toxin Sacs
3 Hive Guard
2 Biovores

Will probably crumple against Tau S7 AP4 spam, but it's a wall of wounds. I'm unsure as to whether to make Warriors a ranged component (Deathspitters?) or just to keep them melee, and run them across hoping some survive. The gants and gargoyles give cover to the warriors and act as more ablative wounds that actually are dangerous with Toxin Sacs.

You probably could just replace the Armored Shell Tyrant with more warriors. That'd probably be better, as most people can now deal with T6 2+ MCs nowadays, especially ones as slow as a HT.

But yeah, someone who actually plays Tyranids should alter the list to actually be efficient, I just want to see if mass warriors can be made to work now that most people aren't doing Long Fang/melta spam.

The only issue I see with the list is delivery of the second tyrant...might be better off with fexes...

also...a barbed strangler being the only gun in the unit is inefficient...you're either shooting it and forgoing running...boo

or not shooting it...also boo

Last year I tried something similar to that :

Swarmy
Prime (warlord)

Deathleaper
Zoans in pod
Ymgarls

Warriors (with barbed strangler)
Stealers +broodlord
Stealers +broodlord
Stealers

Biovore
Trygon
Mawloc

Start with biovore + warrior + prime + Swarmy + Mawloc on board. Everything else in reserve
Turn 1 mawloc burrows.
Turn 2 everything arrives.

Prime stays with warriors & biovore and camp back objective and shoot far away. The Prime is the warlord, but with all the immediate threats on the opponent zone + swarmy getting close, usually no one really try to kill the prime after turn 1

Of course, this is NOT a horde list , so I don't play like it. I attack weak targets, refuse flank, never charge alone, and play cat and mouse (use homing beacon from death leaper with the mawloc and whoever has rolled the gate of infinity power).
And end game, if they are still alive, I send the mawloc and deahleaper contest objectives.

Well, at best this is a "semi-competitive" list, but so much funnier to play than the uber-boring Internet list Flyrant flyrant tervigon tervigon gaunts taunts hive guard hive guard.

Prime as your warlord, dakkafexes in pods, fill up with gaunts.

You either lose everything (or the prime gets sniped) before you reach them, or drown them in bodies.

I have no idea if it works in practice.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

How are you kitting the dakkafexes without devourers?

How competitive do you mean by "competitive"? If you mean competitive as in "viable in major tournaments" it's impossible without Tervigons.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

I've always had good luck with hormoguants and gargoyles, so i decided to fill the board with them and see what happens. The strategy is to copy shermans march to the sea. March from one end of the board to the other and either kill or tarpit everything in the way.
