So I've been half in half out of the hobby for a while now, as there's been very little money to field an army beyond 500 pts. But now I'm able to get into it more and actually start to play. I play Space Marines and Orks and I wanna know what 6th ed has done to these 2 armies?

Kain on Tzeentch:
The negative so far outweighs the positive that it creates a vicious cycle, with Chaos ensuring more bad things(TM) and largely only bad thigs happen. The fact that the major Xenos are mostly donkey-caves doesn't help, especially since the Imperiumis in turn, a bunch of donkey-caves.
Thus Tzeentch, god of donkey-caves, is the most generally successful. Because out of this huge pile of donkey-caves, none are more dickish than the great blue Jerk.

6th ed nerfed the crap out of assault and as a result Orks have largely become a shooting army and a relatively low tier codex.

Our new 'auto-includes' are Lootas, Shoota Boyz, and Nob Bikers.

Wait a few more weeks and we'll all find out when the new codex comes out.

for orks, I play semi-competitive (play for fun, win most games), i've only used nob bikes once and they weren't all that. the points escalate too quickly and anyone with a vindicator's gonna wipe half the squad if they get a decent shot in.
I run battlewagons full of boyz, with lootas as backup. it's very effective as few armies can deal with 3 -4 AV14 vehicles on the first turn, and with careful planning you can prepare for your losses - chief among this is to run all 3 shoota-wagons together, and place an objective halfway - the first wagon to be popped sends its boys to go get it, the other 2 wagons keep going for the front line. t'au firing line will be obliterated by the shoota shots, eldar skimmers will always be a problem but that's why the lootas are there, as the skimmers will be seeking side armour you position yourself to make them go in range and los of the lootas. i take 2 rokkits in the boys mobs, just to keep 'em flexible. there's nothing worse than facing stuff your units are entirely useless against, like wraithknights/lords/seers.

powerklaw nobs aren't a must-have any more, bosspole nobs are thoroughly recommended though. it also gives you scope to challenge out a character that'll deal out horrendous damage to the unit - better he inflicts 8 wounds on 1 nob than on the rest of the mob.

I've found lootas in wagons with killkannons to be rather useful this edition - roll forward, snapshot a lot of firepower into a nearby transport, pieplate what comes out. or if they come to you, don't move and fire at better BS.
