Hi dakka dakka

I was just wanting to know what the grounds for thread deletion is.
I am curious to know as I recently created a thread discussing the usage of a certain therapeutic plant which at the time I did not believe to be a problem. I kept the thread clean and positive as I am a pro-herbalist and wanted to show people that such things can be viewed in non-derogatory ways.
There was some mention that it may not be age appropriate as I was informed this site was generally considered to be PG13+ However I was not condoning any specific actions and was simply inquiring to those who would offer to share their experiences.

As stated in the Dakka Dakka rules "posts that contain profanity, insults, blatant attempts at baiting a flame war (trolling), racial slurs, etc. will be locked, edited or deleted."
This particular thread did not fall on the grounds of any of these and since being posted in the "Off Topic" forum did not violate any stated posting restrictions.

I would also like to point out that while considered Illegal in a large number of places in the world it is up for consideration, as has been show by the recent political movements regarding the substance.
There is no denying it's relevancy to the modern world any longer and to condemn it for simply being 'illegal' is rather illogical.

In regards to the discussion of illegal acts I would like to nod my head the way of the recast threads.
Basically:
People discuss methods of recasting trademark products so as to avoid the cost of purchasing multiple items - Supporting and abetting illegal activity but acceptable thread topic
However:
People discuss socially relevant, political, and lifestyle topic on par with "do you drink alcohol/should it be allowed" - Thread deleted without comment after majority of posters expressed views of tolerance and legalisation.

Anyway, I would love to hear from a Mod or two in regards to 'Where Is The Line' when it comes to threads being deleted, closed or accepted.
I would also love to head from the many Dakka users, as while we may not make/enforce the rules, we still have the right to discuss our opinions.

Peace out

I'm not entirely sure I've seen an entire thread get deleted. Generally the gak just gets closed. Though mods will delete posts within a thread

Topics talking about recasting and circumventing copyright get locked pretty quickly.

If you want to hear from a mod, PM a mod.

To be fair, you have zero rights on this privately owned website. We have some privileges that our fascist overlords degree to us, but that's pretty much it. They make the rules, we agree to abide by them when we sign up for the site.

Making your own recasts is not illegal, nor is learning how to cast in general. Asking about how to buy recasts, encouraging buying recasts, or talking about buying recasts is. Those treads get locked/closed/deleted.

Saying "I like marijuana and smoke it", which you said in your post, is tacit endorsement of illegal activity. Drinking alcohol isn't illegal, so doesn't really line up all that well in comparison, in this context.

Making a new thread about a closed thread is usually a pretty good way to get a thread deleted/closed as well. There are channels and trying some end around them with a faux cry for vox populi doesn't really work well. If you have a question about moderation as the mods or ask in Nuts and Bolts.

This is a private message board, and is owned by someone else, you don't have the right to just say and do as you please, actually.

Not if that opinion is against the TOS, which you agreed to when you joined the board. This isn't 4chan where you can just make a post on anything*. We have a wide variety of topics, but there are limits, and fairly reasonable ones, and they are part of the reason why this is generally a decent place to post and not /b/.

Which isn't actually fair, come to think of it since posting off topic on a board other than /b/ even in 4chan will get a thread deleted and even a temp ban.

Not really... no.

This is a private forum... not at the steps of your government offices.

Rights are granted by governments. When you clicked, "I agree with the rules and terms of this website, and agree to follow them" (paraphrase) you said you would adhere to the moderation staff doing what they do, as well as following the Dakka Rules. Rule#1 says that dakka has a Pg-13 rating.

We don't have rights, we have privileges, we have the privilege to post on this site as long as we follow the rules, if we don't follow the rules, the mods can delete our infractions and suspend our posting privileges.

You have the privilege to talk about anything that complies with the rules that you agreed to when you signed up.

But rights...

I see... I guess I will have to accept that even in the "Off Topic" forum there is still subjects that are off topic, even when they are not specified.
Were the original thread to be closed I honestly would not have been surprised as I do not blame any Mods out there for believing they are preventing a potential argument. The fact that it was outright deleted when it was still within site regulations confuses me.

I've not yet seen a recasting thread closed down (I know this doesn't mean that it won't happen)
Endorsement of an activity doesn't force anybody's hand. especially when presented in an open and discussive manner in which the viewers are able to decide for themselves. Also, In terms of effects, substance, and usage alcohol is a perfect example. If you want to bring legalities into it here as well the prohibition of alcohol in the 1920 mirrors current prohibition laws of marijuana.

Did you PM the mods or the admin before posting a public thread questioning their decisions?

The thread was inappropriate with regards to both tone and content, hence it was deleted.
