Hi all,

I've always been a fan of the Changer of Ways but not of the Thousands Sons models or rules. With this in mind, I've spent the last few months collecting late-80s/early-90s Chaos models with the aim of creating a small Tzeentch Cult. Having recently finished a large zombie guard army in which every model was kitbashed I want this army to mainly be about improving my painting skills rather than time consuming conversions. This works well as the old Chaos Renegade models are so good (and expensive) I wouldn't want to risk cutting them up! For the most part, all I will be doing is adding new backpacks and bases to the original models.

Here's some of the lovelies I've collected sporting their new backpacks. Some of them were purchased on ebay or found in mine and my dad's 40k collection that dates back over 25 years. The one's I painted as a child had to be stripped mercilessly.

I've two of this brilliant mushroom-legged figure and unfortunately both of them's staff broke. I initially planned to replace it with a bolter but then noticed a series of cables running from the base of the staff and up the models back. I didn't want to remove these so added this kroot piece to make it look like a gun staff.

That's all for now, thanks for looking!

I was lucky enough to purchase a couple of the renegade heavy weapons marines over the summer. The one on the right is my particular favourite

These guys can be prohibitively expensive but I picked these guys up cheap as their guns were missing. Below is blu-tacked on replacement gun. This is a very old plastic autocannan that used to be on the Chaos heavy weapon/Genestealer cultist sprue. I'm not 100% sure on this and it'd be good to get some thoughts before I start gluing.

Looking at Stuff of Legends this doesn't look too far from the originals.

The autocannon looks really good except it's missing the ammo hopper/clip. Something to explain where the bullets come from. You could say it fires magical bolts but I think it would balance the model better with a ammo hopper/clip.

I think that autocannon is my fav ever GW weapon. I love the idea of it firing magical bolts but I think your right that it needs some ammo. It's hard to find a good picture of the original sprue. This is the best I can get but looking at this I don't think it originally had an ammo feed:

I normally paint with dark colours and want to change that. I'm thinking silver for most of the armour as a nod to the Thousand Sons and their animated suits fluff. For clothes, pendants etc i want to use yellow as I've never used it before. They'll also be a lot of bleached bone on some of the guys.

@salvage - thanks a lot mate. The project that inspired me to do this was by a guy called torture_robot:

Unfortunately the blog seemed to stop. If I could paint these half as well as his I'd be a very happy man!

Hi all,

A busy week at work has prevented me getting any painting done this week. I did, however, get this little guy through the post He's such a cool, wired little figure that really sums up the whole idea of Chaos for me. I'd completely forgotten about his existence till I stumbled across him on eBay.

Sorry about the bad picture quality, it's quite late

Got chance to do some painting today. As noted earlier, I don't like the Thousands Sons models but have always liked their 'walking suits of armour' fluff. I've therefore tried to hint at this look with my renegades rather than traditional tzeentch blue.

For my test models I picked two of plainest renegades. These are both lovely models but don't have any of the loincloths, capes etc that many of the other models have. They will therefore give me the opportunity to practice painting the armour before I move onto the more complex models.

Here's my two tests:

And here they are together:

I'm not 100% happy with them but think they are ok. Look forward to hearing what people think!

Hmmm... I don't know how I'd not noticed that. You are spot on, thanks for pointing it out. I'll have to work out some ways to make these less Iron Warriors and more tzeentch. The next model I'll paint will have robes so hopefully that will fit more the theme I want.

Hi all,

I got a few more guys painted up today and had my first adventure painting with yellow in many moons. I must saw Citadel's yellow paints have improved dramatically over the years. I could never got them to cover areas when I last used them.

Here's the first guy. I know he's technically slaanesh but I love his skull face and I the Rogue Trader days it was ok to have a mix of marks in the same warband.

The next guy is a weird model who looks like his head has been squashed into his armour.

Then there is my first real yellow attempt. I decided to try a guy with a small area of yellow as a test rather than one of the robed guys I'd initially planned to print. I used a base of averland sunset, a wash of nuln oil and a highlight of yiriel yellow. I'm not really happy with this so I've put him next to one of my original test models that used brass scorpion rather than yellow. I may go back to the brass. What do people think?

And then finally here's all the gang together:

It's been a busy few weeks at work but I've had a bonus day off today due to construction workers bursting a water pipe and forcing us to close. Finally a chance for an update! Here are 4 new guys:

This is an old model converted along time ago that has been repainted. I'm pleased with the yellow robes. A prize if anyone can guess where his left arm comes from.

This is a really cool model with a plasma gun arm I got off eBay. He needed a lot of stripping but fortunately most of the detail is still there

And finally here are two dirty mutants I really love. I was very pleased to pick these up for under a tenner!

Hopefully it's starting to feel a bit more tzeentch now. Thanks for looking!

Big weekend update today. Firstly, as I mentioned a long time back, I've never been a big fan of the thousand sons rules in the chaos codex - they're just not sorcerous enough! I've therefore decided to use the grey knight codex for my army. Here's the list I'm aiming to start with:

Coteaz
10 strikes - 2 psycannons, psybolt ammo, daemon hammer
10 strikes - 2 psycannons, psybolt ammo, daemon hammer
Dreadnought - Autocannons, psybolt ammo
Dreadnought - Autocannons, psybolt ammo
Henchman to round out to a 1000 pts

Today I've started my first dreadnought using the old Space Crusade dread. I've another one to strip that you can see lurking in the background. It's very much WIP and needs a lot of green stuff work to fill gaps. At the moment all the trophies are blue tacked on so your feedback on those would be much appreciated.

This is alternative set of trophies from the daemon prince kit. This would require lots of green stuff work to make it look mutated. I think these look disproportionate and prefer the ones in the earlier pics.

And finally here are my henchmen/cultists. I built these for a scavvy gang I made a year ago in the style of PDH. I think they go pretty well with my rogue trader marines

Thanks for looking!

The changer of ways had finally lured me back to the workbench. Well that and the Christmas holidays... Here's two more renegades, who will count as GKs with nemesis daemon hammers.

And here are three more of my normal renegades. I really like the Cthulhu guy on the left and was really pleased to pick him up on eBay. The guy on the right is (I think) the only non-Realm of Chaos era figure in the army. He's a slightly converted fantasy sorcerer.

I'll hopefully not leave it 3 months between updates next time.

@Llamahead - Thanks mate! The space crusade dreadnought is a great model, very clearly influenced by the original Robocop movies. It's funny painting it though as you realise how much GW's plastics have improved since the 1990s. There is more detail on the guard Autocannons i glued to it than the entire dreadnought chassis!

This weekend I've completed work on my two command figures. This guy will represent coteaz and I'm really pleased with him:

This old terminator will be an inquisitor with a psycannon. I am less happy with him, especially his eyes which are a mess. I think he needs some more work.

Finally got some more work on my dreadnought done. Not quite finished, I need to do something with the bad and touch up the trophies a little bit but generally fairly happy.

The renegade squads are coming on nicely so my next step is probably going to be some discs of tzeentch. I've managed to accumulate 5 of them on eBay over the last few months and plan to use them as grey knight interceptors.

Cool for the bone armour a brown ink wash will work wonders actually ink washes are excellent for toning and blending painting.

Thanks Llamahead. I popped down to gw to look for some ink but it's one man store and has closed up for annual leave!

Due to running out of parts, my progress on the second dread has stalled while I await a bitsandkits order. In the meantime, here are a couple more guys I've finished up. I'm pleased with both of these but I'm not sure what to put on the scroll on the 'mushroom for legs' guy's breast plate. Assuming it even is a scroll - it's an odd miniature that one!

Moving forward, what do people think to of this for a dreadknight counts as? I think it fits with the look of the army so far but am unsure how big it is.

The Decimator will work well as a Dread Knight count as it's a bit small but about in the middle between that and a Dreadnaught. GW doesn't do Inks anymore however a decent art shop or stationers will have some. Vallejo and Privateer Press also still do them.

As it's the holidays I've finally got time to do an update. Most of my recent painting time has been taken up trying to revamp my Nids in light of the new codex. With that now done and my first game played (and won!) it's time to get back to the renegades.

I've finally finished the autocannon guy shown in one of my very first posts. As suggested, I added some bullets and a magazine which I think bulk out the gun quite nicely:

Also, this little guy arrived from eBay a few weeks back:

I'd been hoping to get a chaos squat for a long while and was very pleased to finally win one. I was thinking of cutting away his sword and making him a standard bearer but am wary of making a hash of a beautiful model. Any thoughts?

Today I've been working on some disc riders of tzeentch. These will act as interceptors or (if I ever buy some daemons) heralds. Not all the models here were originally disc riders but I think they fit in fairly well.

The whole gang:

Bird man and the faceless scholar:

Pink horror, gun for an arm and three heads (the middle guy is so old that when I got him off eBay he was on a hexagonal slotter base!):

Meanwhile everyone else is getting based:

Hi all,

The disc riders are nearly finished:

Birdman

The Faceless Librarian

Three heads and the pink horror

And then finally we have gun arm, who unfortunately fell off his base just before I took a photo so here's a lovely shot of my fingers. He needs a little more work once he's rebased.

And now here's the BIG DILEMMA! The new grey knights codex seems to have really nerfed strike squads which was looking to be the majority of my force. So the question is, what do I use these guys as? I'd like them to be semi-competitive. So far I have:

20 power armoured guys (including 4 heavy weapons)
2 dreadnoughts with dual Autocannons
5 disc riders
1 wizard
1 leader in terminator armour

Any ideas?

Thanks for looking!

Thank Fifty. I see your point and the figures with robes, mutations etc are the ones I have enjoyed painting most. Hopefully when the army comes together they will stand out from their less corrupted brotherhood and it'll create quite a nice effect. With my next project I am going to try more ambitious, brighter armour. My bad experiences paintings space marines previously made me go for something simple with these guys.
