Im not sure how feasible if at all this is but.
Would it be possible when a new Codex drops to create a temporary sub forum for said Codex so army lists can be posted and critiqued there?
With CSM dropping last week the forum is literally swamped with army ideas and builds - which is great dont get me wrong.
However, other Codex army builds are not getting near enough (if any!) attention because of it and tend to slide down the view ranking.

Would it be possible to have a subforum for maybe a month or so after each codex release and then amalgamate them back into the parent forum?

Probably work

I believe bbcode lets you hide and show forums with minimum hassle. Of course, that means creating 14 new forums and hiding all of them, and then staying on top of that, and then making sure that mods police the forums to shift army lists where they need to go.

EDIT: oh yeah, and for forum consistency's sake, they'd have to shuffle EVERYTHING out of the forum when it came time to hide it to get it back to the "real" army lists subforum. Yeah...

Personally, I think the way to fix this issue would be to create a better system of tagging or indexing army lists. At the present, I feel like I spend a good while searching for lists as I have to search under Grey Knights, Gray Knights, GK, and on and on so that I can be sure I didn't miss some permutation of what I'm looking for. Even then, I fear I could have missed something if someone called it a different name, like Draigowing.

...Not that I have a solution for that either. As long as we're requiring users to input lists as plaintext, you won't be able to programatically search it well, ever. It's just something I've been spending a lot of time thinking about.

Which in itself references the one before that where Yak chimed in.

Interesting. My issue however isnt so much in searching or finding lists as having posts slide down the ranking due to high volumes when new Codexes are released.

anyway was just an idea, cheers.

Here's the thread where yak responded:

And the direct quote, for reference:

It is something that we always consider and it definitely never hurts to put your voice forward that you feel a particular forum is 'too busy', but honestly we'll always tend to err on the side of too few forums than too many.

When you have too many forums it essentially fragments the eyes reading any given forum and while that can make it easier to find a specific topic, in general that will make everything feel a lot less active as people DO tend to head into one forum with the thought of looking at one type of thing and then get side-tracked into reading and commenting on something else entirely different.

The more you split topics up into different forums, the less of this you get which does tend to quickly reduce the people willing to ever go into a forum that they don't imagine they'd be interested in.

The problem with the 40K army list forum (if there is one) isn't that it is too busy...as somebody mentioned, you can always simply jump a few pages back or do a search if you're looking for a specific topic. The real issue is that far more people are interested in POSTING their army list and hoping for feedback than they are willing to GIVE feedback on other peoples' list themselves.

And on top of that, way, way too many people simply post their army list and then ask for general feedback...essentially requiring others to do all the guesswork of trying to figure out what they're trying to accomplish with their army list instead of asking specific and targeted questions that people will easily be able to identify and respond to.

So splitting up the forum into say different army list forums for every single faction would not help the problem at all. Yes, topics wouldn't drop off the front page quite as quickly in each forum, but people still wouldn't necessarily post responses simply because there are generally more topics being created than people giving feedback.

Personally, I can see the point of the OP here (and others who have mentioned it), but as you can see in some of the subforums further down the main page, sometimes creating a subforum can result in less views / participation rather than more on a topic...

Thanks Rip/Yak and pretre. Good counter-points.

Yak makes an excellent point.

However, I dont think splitting the 40k army list subforum into two will result in less people viewing/commenting .

I think that the "new codex" posters will post new lists in a sub forum and then maybe after a month(?) they get amalgamated into the main forum?

I think we might be getting confused between users viewing and posting VS posts that "arent current" - the search function is quite good on Dakka. Its the myriad of multiple army lists "post Codex release" that hinders the overall purpose of the sub forum.
