Subject: Grey Hunters compared to Tactical Squad

Hi,
I am trying to compare the Grey Hunters to the standard Tactical Squad.
Looking at the army list I assume one of the Grey Hunters has a close combat weapon and bolt pistol and the rest have bolters.
The model with the close combat weapon and bolt pistol would get a +1 attack in close combat and make him pretty much same a Tactical Sergeant but with Leadership of 8 instead of 9
As there is no difference between a close combat weapon and a chain sword could I use my Tactical Squad Sergeant to represent the Grey Hunter with the close combat weapon and bolt pistol?

the difference between greyhunters and a tactical squad is:
greyhunters all have:
bolter
boltpistol
chainsword
they have no regular sgt
while tacticals have a bolter+pistol
you could use a regular tactical squad as a greyhunter squad except for heavy weapons (that why sw's have longfangs ^^)

Thanks!
So pretty much all Space Marines are deemed to have a bolter and bolt pistol?
With the grey hunters you have the option of arming each with either a chain sword/bolt pistol or bolter for the same points?
So it a be a Tactical squad (minus heavy weapons) or an Assault squad or somewhere in between.
With a normal Tactical squad the bolt pistol only comes into play when the sergeant upgrades to include a close combat weapon.

Grey hunters have bolt pistol, bolter and chain sword as standard. You get the extra attack in close combat for having 2 CCW. You get two special ranged weapons 1 if less than ten men and if you have ten the second is free. You lose the heavy weapon but long fangs are cheap as hell. You also have the ability to switch one with a power weapon etc.

Also you can have one of the units take MotW, and have one unit get 1+D6 base attacks. You loose the +1 from CC however.

tactical marines all have bolt pistols.
They do NOT have close combat weapons.
Grey Hunters are superior in that regard as they can shoot AND do cc well. No heavy weapons in grey hunters, but you get your weapons cheap (pay for one meltagun, get the second one free!)
Grey Hunters also have counterattack.

O.k.
I thought had it but then lost it again.
So in the army list where it says Wargear:
All models in the unit have all the wargear listed (unless specifically noted -e.g. in Vanguard Vet Sqd "the sergeant instead has a power sword")
Is that correct?
With the grey hunters you have the option of arming each with either a chain sword/bolt pistol or bolter without spending any extra points?
- If you go with the bolter you get a range of 24 but
- If you go with the bolt pistol and close combat weapon you get a range of 12 and 1+ in assault
With a normal Tactical squad the bolt pistol only comes into play when the sergeant upgrades to include a close combat weapon.
There is no way to arm the rest of the squad with a close combat weapons so the bolt pistol don't come into play
Is that correct?
I appreciate you patience in this matter. I know I must appear to have the intelligence of a servitor with brain of drunken ork.

IMO, Grey Hunters are way better, they can choose 2 light weapons (I prefer 2 melta guns) that they can fire on the move. Tacts can only choose one, and one heavy, making them more static. Offcourse, you can also choose to field them as a combat squad, making an extra scoring unit in time of needs. Automatically Appended Next Post: The BOlter, pistol and chainsword, is standard wargear on the Grey Hunter, they allways have all three.

"The Bolter, pistol and chain sword, is standard wargear on the Grey Hunter, they always have all three"
Surely that doesn't mean that they can shoot at range 24 with the bolter and then later on get a +1 bonus in the assault phase for having a pistol and CCW?
With the grey hunters you would have to choose to either arm each marine with a chain sword/bolt pistol or bolter ????
If for no other reason than the model must represent wargear???

No choice involved they have all three baseline. Bolter, Pistol, CC Weapon and benefit from all three. They can fire 24" AND get +1 attack in cc.

That's right. They have all three.
Chaos space marines can also have all three if you pay for them.

Alright,
I think I am able to accept the Emperor's peace on this one.
I will assume the following is correct :
- In an army list where it says Wargear:
All models in the unit have all the wargear listed (unless specifically noted -e.g. in Vanguard Vet Sqd "the sergeant instead has a power sword")
So...
All grey hunters have a bolter, close combat weapon and bolt pistol.
-As long as I throw scabbards on a some of the marines with bolters and have a few holding close combat weapons and bolt pistols this is enough to represent this.
e.g. the picture link below

All your feedback has been great

No one will rip you a new one for not representing everything a grey hunters unit entry is equipped with... if they do they are just being a massive J.O. and should be ignored. Or, you could challenge him to a duel. Weapons choice to the challengee of course. We are gentlemen after all.
