So I was playing a fellow Necron player recently and was able to help him with a couple of rules from the Codex that he had miss-read slightly. The rules would have given him a decent advantage if I hadn't been able to correct him. I don't think he was in any way cheating, just hadn't read the rule quite right.

Having never been to a tournament before, I'm just wondering what is the story in a tournament with checking other people's rules? If someone pulls a rule that you aren't familiar with (which would be a lot of stuff from Tau and Eldar for me, for instance - likely to be a fair few of those at the tournament) would you ask to have a look? Or do you just take it on the chin? Where does one draw the line with this sort of thing?

Hope this isn't too vague. I'm just trying to build a picture of etiquette.

I wonder how one polices things like weaknesses also. The first time I played a Tyranid player he didn't know to roll for instinctive behaviour. Does one just assume that people know there own rules? Or do you make a point of trying to know the rough stuff from other codices?

It's 100% appropriate to ask to see the rules in the codex if you're not familiar with them. And to ask if there's anything in the FAQ about them if the rule really seems odd.

You have every right to ask your opponent to see their rules if you're confused or are skeptical of something. If your opponent refuses to show you (and you aren't just using rule questions as a stalling tactic) they're either TFG or a cheater, and you should call the TO over to verify the rule. There is no legitimate reason to ever refuse to show your opponent your rules.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Ask away if you're not sure about a rule. You aren't expected to know everything for every army off by heart, so your opponent should have no problem whatsoever with you looking something up.

This really. They have no reason not to show you unless they are deliberately trying to cheat. Some may get offended that you are calling them out on a rule, but if they are playing it correctly they shouldn't have an issue showing you.

The key is how you ask to see the rule.

Don't just say "I don't believe you! Show me!" instead say "Wow that's pretty crazy, mind if I have a look?"

Both achieve you desired result butone prevents you from becoming TFG
