Subject: 750pts Necron Beginner List
|
 |

Hi, i'm just getting back into the hobby after several years. I used to play space marines but since starting again i've recently gathered together a small necron force to play.
This is the list that I have come up with based on the units i've bought so I thought I would post it and try to gain some insight on where to go from here.
HQ
Overlord - with Immortals
Cryptek (Harbinger of Destruction - Eldritch Lance, Solar Pulse, Gaze of Flame) - In Ghost Ark
TROOPS
9 x Necron Warriors - In Ghost Ark
5x Necron Warriors
8 x Necron Immortals
DEDICATED TRANSPORT
Ghost Ark
FAST ATTACK
5 x Canoptek Scarabs
HEAVY SUPPORT
Annihilation Barge
TOTAL - 748pts
UNITS I OWN
Night Scythe / Doom Scythe.
Immortals can be re-equiped to be deathmarks.
From the one game I have played using this list, the only thing that didn't really perform well in my opinion was the overlord as I don't have enough points to give him any better equipment based on the units I have taken so he just wanders round with the immortals taking the odd shot at things.
Any comments or criticisms are welcome.

Really you want the sempiternal weave, warscythe and mind shackle scarabs on The Lord. Then he becomes a combat beast!

Just looking over the codex based on your suggested wargear.
I could reduce the number of necron warriors, maybe even drop the 5 man squad and add the upgrades to the overlord.
That would leave me with some room to add another immortal putting it up to a 9 man squad.
A further idea would be to drop the annihilation barge and add a night-scythe for the immortals plus overlord.
The rules however seem unclear as to whether the overlord can use one, as the immortals can and he is accompanying them so does that mean he can too?
What do you think?

But only if the Lord becomes fast as a Dlord.
I'd include the Night Scythe giving it to the Immortals unit.

Well, this list looks better but it may still not be good enough.
How about starting from the following core (AB as CCB):
10 Warriors w/ GA - 260
10 Immortals w/ NS - 270
Overlord w/ warscythe, CCB - 190
720 pts.

I plan 750 to be something like:
HQ
Overlord - 145
MSS
Warscythe
Res orb
Troops
15x warriors – 195
5x warriors – 180
Ghost Ark
5x Immortals – 85
Tesla
Fast
3x Scarabs – 45
Heavy
Annihilation barge - 90
740
With maybe the res orb switched for sep weave and an extra scarab.
Think i prefer this over yours, as you'd only have a ghost ark and scarabs on the board from the start.

It seems that you started with Battleforce. I would go with something like that:
HQ
Necron Overlord - Warscythe, Ressurection Orb, Sempiternal Weave @145pts - Might take him with simple Staff of Light, since he is in a shooty unit, and take additional Necron Warrior
Royal Court @85pts
Harbringer of Storm - Voltaic Staff
Harbringer of Despair - Abyssal Staff, Veil of Darkness
Elites
5 Deathmarks @ 95pts
Troops
5 Necron Immortals with Tesla Carbines + Night Scythe @185pts
11 Necron Warriors @143pts
Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge @ 90pts
Total 743
Tactic is quite simple - we shoot. Our Overlord has 11 additional wounds with Flayers, along with resorb he can do things. Immortals are accompanied by Harbringer of Storm and act as anti-vehicle commandos (with good anti-infantry firepower as well) - 4 Haywire shots just strip HP from everything, Rhino to LR, you name it. Scythe is a good gun platform and a transport. Deathmarks go with another Cryptek, and this is the rape train of this army - Cryptek wounds everything they mark on 2+, with AP1 and template it can kill everything - and Veil allows it to go somewhere else AND put new marks - just jump across the table and kill whatever you don't like. A-barge is simple and tasty - shoot, kill, AV13 in 750 pts is the thing.

Thanks again for all the feedback. I do like your suggestion Makcimak. Its more my style of play which tends to be wandering around the board shooting things. Yea, I bought the battleforce and a cryptek, then an annihilation barge and another squad of immortals and yesterday my night scythe arrived so gonna do my best to get it built and base coated tonight. What units would you recommend to be next on the purchase list? I was thinking about another annihilation barge and more warriors. Ill take your list idea on board when i'm making amends to my list. I have a game planned tomorrow against a space marine army so i'll have make a list decision by tonight.

First thing I'd buy would be another A-barge, totally agree with you. It would be a good idea to magnetise it in order to swap to CCB. Then, it could be anything you wish - Imotekh, Zandrekh or Obyron; D-lord and a bunch of wraiths for some HtH; maybe another croissant. It all depends on your playstyle and preferences.
Warriors are not the best idea, really - the best troops choice necrons currently have is Immortals in Scythe - they are much more killy, they have 3+ and they have access to Tesla-weaponry, which is much more useful compared to Gauss (mathematically it's more worthy in 5 out of 6 situations).
A-Barge is a mainstay of necron armies right now, but you might actually look at one unit of 1-3 Spyders as well - rock solid units, able to spam Scarabs like there is no tomorrow. 4+ psy-protection is good as well.
There are only two options you should avoid - Flayed Ones and Monolith. Monolith right now is just a dead option - you wouldn't take it at low points, and at high-pts game it just suddenly dies - 4HP is not that much. Flayed ones can't charge after infiltration or DS, have only 4+ and low initiative. And their claws are pretty much useless.

Yea I am definitely looking for another A-barge. My play style is mostly shooting things, but the scarabs won me the game when i played them last, so i can see the importance of having some combat oriented units to help balance the list.
I think i'll lean more towards the spyders as I really like the look of the model.
It's such a shame about the monolith, I have always really liked the look of them.

Surprised to hear that about the scarabs. They are a very easy first blood VP for an opponent, so I would think that most folk would go after them turn one if possible.
Wraiths are the best combat unit the necron has, one of the best units in the game, but you ideally want six.
They really tie the enemy up and give them something they have to deal with.
By the way, in respect of some stuff above, I've seen two high-finishing tournament lists recently with flayed ones in. I think there are tactics that work where you infiltrate them and make them be something your opponent has to deal with. If, as these two guys were, you are running two wraith units (six in each) the flayed ones give you a better chance of getting those wraiths up the board and up in some face.
