Hey everyone

So I'm gettin the nephew started on his CSM army, he's had them for a while and started painting them Alpha Legion... and now wants to do Black Legion lol

I got him a bunch more for Christmas and have been doing the prep work on the bits for him so we can build em together, theyve got my Dark Angels, and Orks to play against also theres a local wargaming club I've been meaning to check out, might be nice to take him along for some varied games

So I've stripped the handful he had painted for him, and am working on spraying the whole lot black. Have been fitting magnets to a few models for him too.
Noticing the lack of shoulder pads in CSM kits for making swappable arms with, So does anyone know of any where to get Chaosy shoulder pads? offical, 3rd party, converted perhaps I'm not fussy

Another thing I'd like to get is heavy weapons, only having heavy bolter marines seem kinda lame :/
Any good places to get chaosy heavy weapons? again 3rd party or official or converted i suppose.

I don't have the Chaos codex book (the nephew does i could get it from him), so am unsure precisely what option are allowed or are best to take either, advice on that front might be handy?

The model count for the army is as follows;

40 cultists (DV set twice)
6 chosen (DV set once)
Lord - (DV Lord)
1 Hellbrute (DV multi melta / power fist)
1 Terminator Sorcerer/Lord
28 chaos marines - 10 of which are converted to be nurgle marked with greenstuff, 3of which are boltgun only (the little 3pack of marines), 15 could become anything
5 Raptors
1 predator - not built yet, will have all options magnetised
1 rhino - have a predator top turret spare, want to source some sponsons for it to make it a optional 2nd predator
1 landraider - i got this cheap on ebay and itle be a bit of a restoration project - sitting in the paint stripper now.

I've never played as Chaos Marines before, dont really know whats the best (or atleast not terrible) choices to make for the army loadout and composition. My nephew is only 9 so I'l be helping him out on the whole aspect of it I guess. If you lovelly fellows have any secrets of the dark gods to share with me, that would be so helpful

I'm kinda treating him by getting some conversion bits to make the army a bit more complete and workable hehe the Landraider was a steal, just needed the thousand sons paintjob stripping off and a bit of a rebuilding.

Ork big shootas make great autocannons with a little work, and trading spares with other players can sometimes get you what you need. As for shoulder pads. Simply file the icons off imperial versions and paint in the appropriate colours.
I have boxes of chaos spares and would be happy to donate any bits you need.
I've included some pics of my havoc squad as possible inspiration. Please excuse the poor paint jobs, they're from a while ago.

Run DV Lord as sorceror. Use LR as transport for Termie Lord with CSM. Don't use the chosen as chosen, rather as aspiring champions in your CSM units. If you creatively cut plasma pistols from chaos sprues, you can make passible plasma guns on a bolter stock. Two cultist waves as bullet catchers while your marines advance laying the pain! Like the idea of dual predators. One rhino will get toasted by itself.
Equipping the csm: perhaps run the nurgle marked as plagues marines. Run the other guys as unmarked with a special weapon (plasma, melta, flamer) and champ with whatever chosen marine is equipped. Don't worry about mixing bolters and bolt pistols with close combat weapons, the unit allows for both in same unit. You can have all three for extra points, but it is not worth it.
This way you should have:
2:HQ
3:Elites
4-6:Troops
1:Fast Attack
3:Heavy Support
Not competitive for tournaments, but could be fun against some lists that aren't deathstar/taudar/massed flyers.
Hope that helps!

Awesome, thanks for the pointers.
I'l check the orks bitz stocks for big shootas although they might well be already handled by my orks

I've been toying with using some plastic tubes and rods to convert a heavy bolter into an autocannon... looks okay, the barrels a bit slim perhaps. I can quite happily replace that later when aI've settled on how to do them; be it converting or purchasing hehe. My nephew doesnt really have the funds to be customising his troops like this so itle be out of my pocket for him I don't mind hehe.

Have spotted the anvil industries exo-lords auto cannons and missile launchers. Might just order those and source some pads £4 for 2 AC's with the arms holding it, another option I was looking at was bashing a chaos heavy bolter with an imperial guard auto cannon... but buying both of those bits makes it cost more than the anvil industry ones and involve me doing some work to them.
Another option I've found is Forge World Legion Auto Cannons; £12 for 5.... I think the anvil industrys ones actually look better than the FW ones so its nice that theyre slightly cheaper.

For special weapons I've got 2 of each, and could use some of the imperial variaants out of my Dark Angels bits box.
What I don't have any of atall is combi weapons :( Do we like to give chaos champions combi weaponry? or would we rather give them hand to hand things and pistols?

Hadnt thought of running the DV lord as a Sorcerer, I was going to build the Termy lord as a sorcerer so that there was a guy with psychic powers to use. Sorc's not really need the terminator armour?

I was looking at making the 10 nurgle marked csm have a plasma gun and an auto cannon (11 if I use a chosen as a champion the one with the axe, covered in bones might work with nurgle )

10 khorne marked csm, in rhino, 2 flamers or meltas

the remaining csm together maybe as a havoc squad if i can get the bits, or maybe another ccw unit to go alongside the termy lord who could take the other 2 spaces in the land raider.
with 2 ccw units I could give one flamers and one meltas, or 1 of each in each?

I might end up with an odd couple of guys spare by using the Chosen as champions; theres more guys with a power weapon or some special gear than there will be squads to be led (I think)

Havocs better with autocannons? or Missile launchers? ML gets flak.... could be handy as otherwise this warband is boned by flyers?
