I haven't played 40k in years but have picked up the current codex and looking at the new rules. Planning to play some time soon and using my old marine army with some newer additions to fill it out. Looking to just have a fun army that can be competitive at the same time. Let me know what you guys think and what might be more competitive layout/equipment.
Notes: Tactics will generally be, drop pod the 3 devastator squads first turn, split them into combat squads (sergeant with signum goes with the multimeltas, other combat squad has the heavy bolters). Multimeltas go for heavy armour targets while heavy bolters go at infantry. Depending on how far I drop the pods, I can use the land speeder storms to bolster the flanking devastator squad and prevent the enemy from deep striking units strait on top of them (at least for hopefully a turn or 2). The scouts can secure objectives or back up the devastators. Once reserves kick in, I'll have 3 full squadrons of land speeders with multimeltas and typhoon missile launchers. They can pretty much give the devastators an instant kick (the ones that are left by then.. lol) and take out any armour units that my devastator squads fail to take out. At last, a low point HQ character, a librarian with a jump pack. I guess I'll just fly him around and keep him in cover to distract the enemy. I'll have 2 extra drop pods, basically so I can drop 3 in the first turn and if one or 2 get destroyed, I can hopefully drop one or two to provide extra deep strike locations for the speeders. On days where I don't feel like drop pods and deep strikes, I could replace the pods with some tactical marines and a vindicator just to give the opponent something to focus fire on and away from my devastators!
Additional Notes: I'm guessing this army list is more 'for fun' than competitive. In my mind, the competitiveness will come from playing the list to it's full potential. But just imagine the sky opening up with drop pods landing with marines armed to the teeth! Then comes a wave of land speeders shooting missiles at everything in sight. Also, having the crimson fist bolter drill is a benefit when using so many bolters/heavy bolters.
