Did the preheresy legions use experimantal arms and armor? I want to use some alternate armors instead of FW stuff and want to know if its fluff consistent.

At the time, current marks of armor were experimental.

TDA was also relatively new.

Man portable plasma cannons and multimeltas were not yet developed, hence why CSM don't have them, so you could have some of those be your experimental weaponry.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Technically, plasma guns and plasma blasters were also experimental, as originally they used Volkite guns instead of plasma.

Um, originally they used Volkite guns instead of bolters.

Plasma was actually less common at the time, bolters were more common, then plasma phased out volkite weapons.

Hrmmm? I could have sworn that volkite was originally the bolter gun in that all SM had them. As time progressed though, demand for the weapons became too much and it was a complex piece of technology only Mars could create. As time progressed, bolters became the standard arms. So volkite probably became the "plasma" weapon. Eventually though, after a dramatic heresy, the fall of many tech priests of mars to chaos, and then stagnancy, the comprehension of the technology failed not to mention their capability of outputting enough of them.

Horus Heresy: Betrayal wrote:Once relatively common within the fledgeling Legions, they had fallen largely from favour by the time of the Heresy, and had been superseded in the space Marine Legions by the far more flexible and utilitarian Terran bolter.

They were replaced by bolters, not plasma guns.
