So I bought the dark talon/ neph jet fighter and though I assembled it as a neph, I got to looking at the Talon in the codex and can't help but wonder if it isn't a hidden little gem. I play against Necrons a lot and it seems like using the rift cannon to force an init test or become blind against their init 2 would be great. Since my gaming group doesn't have a problem with proxys or counts as, I think I'm going to give it a try. Thoughts.

The Nephilim Jetfighter is kind of a bad unit, honestly. It's killing power is not 180 points worth as the unit actually costs.
I actually have had a lot of success with my Dark Talon. Point for point, you actually have slightly better damage output than 6 bikers would be and it's the same cost. Probably easier in a tournament setting to blow up the Dark Talon than kill 6 bikers, but if people don't bring dedicated anti-flyer weaponry, the Dark Talon will stay on the board the rest of the game after it comes in.
The Rift Cannon isn't as bad as people make it out to seem. Yeah okay it doesn't have any AP, but then again if you're not at least AP4, it doesn't really matter. Most the time things are going to have cover anyway. Typical blast marker hits between 1-3 guys, so it's roughly on par with the damage output of a Heavy Bolter. The blind checks have saved my bacon against Tau numerous times.
The bomb is also freakin' awesome. Nothing like dropping it on top of someone's turbo-death star blob to make them all initiative: crapola, then assault it with some black knights.

I actually really like the Nephilim, in my friendly gaming group it usually does well and earns its points back. I know that's not a popular opinion but hey, we can at least agree that it's a sweet model.

Oh totally. I love my actual model.
It's just it tends to not really do a lot for me compared to my dark talon. It's pretty good against the Chaos player I usually play against because he brings these super beefy Daemon Princes, but it tends to not really accomplish much against most other players I play. Can't do much against Tau who either shoot it out of the sky on MY TURN because Interceptor is such a fun rule, and even then can't really cause any significant damage to Battlesuits. Eldar just laugh as it plinks and plonks against their Wave Serpents. Chaos Marines not bringing Daemon Princes tend to vector strike it out of the skies with their own Heldrakes.
It makes me sad. If it's missiles were one-use-only Flak Missiles instead of the total uselessness that is the S6 missile it's got, it'd be worth bringing.

Wanted to attempt making it look like Marble. Didn't quite work out because I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to painting anything beyond basic basecoat, wash and highlighting.

I've found that using the avenger mega bolter and going troop hunting with it has been most effective for me.

It's not a bad effort at all
