you have probley done this before but do you have to say what things are in the dark eldar potal in escalation so if the potals are not deployed then the unit  are destroyed or do you get to bring them on as reseve's and does that mean when rolling for reseve's then they have to come on even if the potal's are not in play

Remember that you still have to roll for reserves as normal, even if the WWP is not in play. The units just cannot come in until the turn after the WWP is deployed. A lot of players will wait until turn 2 to deploy the portal just for this reason. On average, you will get half of your reserves on beginning turn 2 and 2/3 of what's left beginning of turn 3. That way, you get about 80 percent of your reserves coming in at the same time.

Now, I only have the original copy of the codex, and I don't have the FAQ handy (seems to have disappeared), so this might not be a completely accurate representation of the rules. The rules for the WWP state that "{after WWP is deployed} From then on, units entering play as reserves may be placed on the portal template instead of entering on the table edge." I also seem to remember from the FAQ that the template is treated like a table edge for how you move from it.

Later in the entry for the WWP, the codex states, "If you have a WWP in your army, you may keep units in reserve, even if you are not normally allowed to do so n the mission being played. If you do this, then the troops may ony enter through the webway and if it has not been opened on the turn they beocme available to enter play, they must be held back until it is."

Upon reading this closely (without the FAQ in front of me for clarification), it appears that it doesn't matter "where" the reserves are coming from. The first quote seems to indicate that if your WWP isn't opened, the reserves must immediately come in from the board edge, if you are playing a mission where reserves are allowed. Units are only held back in the WWP if the mission doesn't normally allow for reserves. If this is the case, I think I have been playing this wrong.

I hope I haven't just muddied the waters.

Any help clearing this up would be appreciated.

The rule which allows units not normally in reserve to come on through the WWP as reserves would certainly seem to suggest that they have to come on through the WWP.  However, it is certainly unclear.

In situations where the rules are unclear the ethical approach is the one which gives the least advantage to the action taker.  This leads to the conclusion that units not normally in reserve and which are specifically using the WWP rule must come on through it.  However, units that would normally be in reserve still have a choice.

I don't have a codex handy, but I could have sworn reading in the codex(I dont own a copy)that if all the WWP carriers were killed before they could lay down the WWP, all the units who were in the Webway never show up. I could be very wrong, however.

I see it going something like this...

INSIDE THE WEBWAY, A DARK ELDER ARMY AWAITS SLAUGHTER...
Bob: Wasn't Steve supposed to open the Webway so we could pour through and then kill, rape, and pillage?
Larry: Yeah, seriously, that slacker is always late. I had plans with the wife after this and now I am going to be late just waiting to get into the fight!
Bob: Hey, isn't tonight your anniversary?
Larry: Yes, and she is going to be pissed if I miss the dinner. I better bring her home a Tau head to make up for this. *sigh*
