I'm starting out a Chaos Army based on 2 of the new Chaos Attack Force box sets, +40 hand-me-down DV Cultists + a Helbrute, a Daemon Prince, and Abbadon.

Since I have the Black Legion book, I was originally gonna go Black Legion. Are rules in Crimson Slaughter (a) better than Black Legion, (b) better enough than Black Legion to buy the book, (c) better enough to build a Crimson Slaughter vs. Black Legion army in light of my slight preference for Black Legion color scheme, or (d) none of the above?

I've never asked this question directly, but have had people tell me there's a wicked artifact in Crimson Slaughter for Sorcerers...other than that I haven't heard of any real advantages unless you like Possessed.

Well Im a fan of both supplements, I know many people feel Crimson Slaughter is much better and that Black Legion is one of the worst supplements yet. I suppose it all depends on how competitive you want to play, as the additional tax you pay on all models in a BL detachment can quickly stack up to a hefty amount and I thats an issue for many competitive players. I, on the other hand, only play casually with my friends and love to experiment.

Black Legion:
I often run Black Legion and Ive had some success with it...mostly as I also love using Warp Talons, which again, is seen as a weak unit - and running a Slaanesh Lord with Eternal Warrior and +D6A is fun and quite killy against certain opponents.
Chosen as troops is alright, again somewhat expensive but as a small allied detachment you get scoring units with decent amount of Attacks and loaded up on plasma they can be pretty lethal unit without spending TOO many points

Crimson Slaughter
I haven't played them yet, but from what Ive read I can see why they're very viable, as it gives us (if nothing else) 2 relics of note:
- The one grants a Sorcerer access to Divination which greatly improves shooting as many of our long-range firing suffers from BS3
- The other provides us with Artificer armour which is great since many of the popular CSM HQ builds involve Nurgle Biker Lords...only now for the first time they can have a 2+sv - same as our Imperial counterparts. It also gives the bearer IWND.

All in all the CS one is more favourable simply because it will improve already popular builds in our army and grant army-wide buffs.

The issue I still have with the Supplements is that all these relics are still only one-offs...so instead of giving the Artificer Armour as wargear or Divination as a purchaseable upgrade for multiple HQs, we're still limited to one per army...so we're not totally free from allying in Daemons for additional Divination through Tzeentch Heralds / Lords of Change.

Havocs and terminators shoot at BS3 now?

you automatically lose points for using the trite gamer-isms: balanced, meta, Mat Ward, etc.

Crimson Slaughter all the way as far as I'm concerned.

The Slaughter get an army-wide bonus, the Legion get an army-wide tax. 'Fear' isn't fantastic and VotLW isn't expensive on an individual basis, but the end result could see you 100pts down because you were forced into upgrades you didn't want. I would rather have the option for VotLW removed rather than be forced to pay for it across the board.

The unit changes aren't anything of note. Possessed are sidegraded in that they trade melee power for actually reaching melee in the first place, but it's not enough to make them workable. On the other hand, Legion lets you take Chosen in a role that they are totally unsuited for. Expensive guys who's sole job is to carry expensive guns, with no defensive abilities except an even-more expensive Mark, do not make good Scoring units.

Finally, Artefacts, and I would consider the Slaughter to simply be better.
Divination is gold dust, as is a 2+ save. The Horns are dirt cheap for what they provide. The Prophet, Sword and Mace aren't quite so hot but you have 3 rock-hard options for very, very cheap.
On the other hand, Legion gives you expensive Eternal Warrior, a cheap Daemon Sword and a Blind-splosion psychic power, all of which are decent but not outstanding. I wouldn't consider them to be better than the stock Mace, Axe and Brand from Codex:CSM. You also have 3 stinkers in the ludicrously expensive Eye, pointlessly crippling Crucible and the unnecessary Hand.

Basically, take the Legion if you really want a defensive Daemon Prince without taking Biomancy, or if you want to cram Chosen into totally unsuitable roles.
Take the stock book if you want the Axe, Brand or Mace.
Take Slaughter in every other situation, just for the free Fear. Divination, Horns and Heart are the finishing touches.

Oh im sorry...I didnt think id have to spell it out. No im refering to defilers / fiends / drake / many FW models such as blight drones (BS2) / decimator etc...well anything with daemonic possession but im sure you understood what I meant and eitherway the point is precience = better accuracy. And I wouldnt exactly classify terminators as long range...do people actually field them that way?

Reaper autocannons are pretty sweet. And are you forgetting obliterators?
