My friend and I are getting into fire storm armada, tomorrow we will get the starter set. Im really keen on the terran fleet, and he is keen on the other one in that set.

How good is the set for a "full navy"? or is there plenty of room to expand?

Im a huge fan of aircraft carriers so if I can expand id love to get a strong carrier fleet set up.

I know nothing about the game, so essentially, where do I go from the starter set onwards?

For Terrans if you want to expand i would pick up the Ares carrier box. That thing is a beast and will supplement your basic force nicely. From there a cruiser box and frigate box will give you more then enough to go up to 1200 points. The cruisers can be built as standard or heavies and the frigate box comes with a squadron of both the basic Armsmen and the close range Missionaries. After you're past 1200 a second bb like the Apollo is nice or you can go for the big boy dreadnaught if you prefer or the more flexible battlecruiser box. I would play at around 800 with the starter and carrier to get a feel for how you like to play first before you make any other choices though since you may stumble on something you like more .

Thanks heaps man.

So the starter set was ordered hours ago, so in a few weeks im planning on just buying a large fleet and going from there.

If only you had answered hours before hand I would have got the boxes you mentioned. Oh well ill get the sets you recommended and once I have a grip on the game ill go from there.

If you dont mind me asking:

So what are the carriers like?

What is the general gist of the Terran fleet? I heard something about shields being their thing?

Carriers are a little bit different from other games. The biggest thing being that their SRS (fighters bomners etc) are sorta tethered in that theyre not autonomous. The SRS share the same activation as their parent ship and must stay within command distance of the parent ship unless theyre making an attack run (limited by the SRS's movement range). Other then that though theyre pretty typical for carriers. Theyre weaker then most large ships and have less weapons but they also have the ability to take a pair of cruisers as part of their squadron which helps boost their firepower considerably. You do have to pick which types of SRS you take before hand, but I havent found that too awefully limiting.

Terrans do rely on shields for protection, as such most of their ships have low damage and critical ratings (armor basically). Theyre also a "close range" faction so they dont have many weapons that fire out past 20" or so and the ones they do are pretty weak or they're torpedoes. Oh and they like their nukes which can make some big explosions so theure dangerous for closely packed ships which means most people will spread out a lot early on making it harder for them to manuver and line up their weapons.

Ok sounds good.

So the shields are obviously there to keep my ships alive while they zoom forward trying to bring weapons to bear.

Alright thanks dude. The rest i will learn. As its the best part.

But I know what to aim for and roughly what im in for. Also I found the rules on their site which is handy. Thanks again.
