level of evilness grants entry in 40k?
my faction has to be evil, but I don't care if others are evil
everyone has to do evil things, its not grimdark without in 40k
everyone has to do evil things, I don't want to be the only evil one
mine has to be less evil, but others have to be more evil so I am more gooder
40k needs more good, less evil !
mine has to be good, other have to be evil. I need this black&white
factions without any hint on evil should not be allowed in 40k

I never could put my finger on why the Tau not being"GrimDark" bothered me in 40k but I think you hit it on the head here. I've always wondered what happens when their human population produces an alpha level psyker (the kind that that tends to go nuts and wreck a whole planet if unchecked) or they are invaded by Enslavers. These are just a couple of reasons other races end up being GrimDark but Tau don't have to worry about them for some reason.

Good point. It one of those unaddressed issues the Tau have that bugs me too. They'll have to form their own witchhunting inquisition to deal with those troublesome Humans. Those 'umies are more trouble than they're worth if you ask me.
I wonder if any Etherals have considered breeding their own human navigators y'know - for the greater good.

Very likely. they wouldent breed them thou. they would just stick highly phkcic familys in the air chase. let nature do the rest.

In the deathwatch rulebook, I believe there is a quote suggesting that a rogue human psyker under the influence of Chaos is somehow manipulating Tau policy in that region of space.

My perception of the Tau isn't so much that the new book retcons the nature of their empire, but, rather, that we're watching them evolve as a society into one of the big Grimdarks.

Sure, when they've just emerged from behind the warp storm, they're naive and good-intentioned, but, when the nature of the threats that they are facing becomes clear, they begin to shift toward the gray, and adopt a more "whatever we have to do to maintain the status quo" attitude. At the same time, we turn up the contrast on their caste society so what appeared to be a cultural division of labor starts to become darker sort of slave/citizen/masters dichotomy.

I'm hopeful that the Deathwatch stuff isn't just a throwaway line, and that it's the kernel of a reoccurring theme: when a race begins to travel out into the vast stars, they loose their innocence, and, ultimately, will have to come face to face with the Chaos both within and without.

I would have to say that you cant use today's moral and ethic standard and compare them to 40k, there standard of whats right and whats wrong could be complete different then today's standards and of course as was stated earlier what one faction deems justice and right another views as the most vile evil. And also as stated earlier are view of morals is human and there fore how could you compare them to any other faction except the IoM.

Orks, kill and wage war off instinct nothing more then an animal does they dont have human morals that killing is wrong perhaps not killing to them is wrong.
Nids, are controlled by a single powerful mind that possible knows what it is doing is mass murder and genocide but again perhaps this is right for the race and not killing is wrong
Necrons, where once humans IIRC, thus what they do could be sayed to be evil and wrong by human standards unless im wrong that they where not human
Chaos, knows that killing, murder, pain suffering etc. is what fuels them thus its right from there perspective, wrong from humans and evil

And the list goes on id just be repeating myself, the IoM by today's standards is evil and wrong but there awesome .

Also about killing depending on who you are its wrong or justifiable or maybe necessary evil it all come down to the person.

And I think a good faction could survive for a bit it mite even get the story line advancing for a change
