My locale has been going strong with Warmahordes for the past couple of years, and they've never looked back. I still 40k with a couple of the old timers, but WMH is definitely a better, more balanced, and ultimately, more-fun game if you've got the community for it.
Especially with tournament support.
Besides, you can come play 40k on V40K; http://vassal40k.tripod.com/home.html

StonedDragons wrote:Sadly I am seriously contemplating leaving Warhammer 40k for one of the other gaming systems. It has not been a easy choice, I love the game, I think it has great promise, amazing potential but Games Workshop has largely ruined the enjoyment for me. I don't want to look forwards to spending the rest of my hobby playing life watching a procession of 'flavour of the month' books coming out each more powerful than the last just to sell models. I don't want to have to deal with the discriminatory pricing policies I encounter, not only in Australia though it is bad here with even E-books getting at least a 40% 'australian tax' courtesy only of GW on them, but notice that despite significant profit margins on there models the consumer gets little reward back.
I am feeling rather cold and cynical over the whole business to put it bluntly and almost regret having forked out for the eldar army I see sitting lined up on my hobby table.
Hey Man,
Don't give up just yet. For every thing there is to despise about GW there is something to love about 40k.
I can imagine that buying new models in Australia is absolutely brutal, have you looked into purchasing used armies from locals? We have this thing called craigslist where I am, I've purchased multiple armies worth easily over 1000 $ new for about 300~ to get friends into the game. If you can find something similar you can get very good deals.
The Eldar codex is literally right around the corner. My suggestion if you're not enjoying playing so much right now is partially assemble and paint your models until you get a new codex. You may regret quitting right before you get new rules!

Yep I understand from the price gouging it seems all Australian companies are doing it to us. Books, warhammer, computer parts, games hell pretty much anything now days is blam expensive compared to America or England. Anyway hard topic to debate....
I remember like 2-3 years ago when you could get a guardsmen squad for $35 now its like $48

Never understood 'leaving the game.'
I've got games sat on my shelf unplayed for 20 years and I still don't consider that I have left those games. I've just been playing other games until I get round to playing them again.

Maybe you need a change of pace. A game worth trying is malifaux. It blew my mind using a deck of card instead of dice, but the models are cool, really diverse, and it's relatively cheap.

Don't quit. Take a break.
I stopped playing 40k at the end of 4th Ed. Since then I've been collecting Orks, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Blood Angels, Daemons, Warriors of Chaos, Mordheim Warbands, Necromunda Gangs and so forth.
I collect the rulebooks and read a BL novel every now and then. I have probably played maybe 8 games of 40k in the past.. I don't know... 8 or 10 years?
Collecting is one thing, playing another. If the rules upset you there isn't much you can do. If it's the prices of stuff just shop smart. Shop S-Mart. Or... you know... EBay.
My roommate has collected about 3000 points of Daemons for under $200. You just have to put a little effort into hunting down the good deals.
I love 40k. I love Jes Goodwin sculpts. I love the rich background (except the crap they've been pumping out lately). I hate GW with all my twisted heart and blackened soul.
I plan on playing a lot more games after the new Eldar codex comes out. If I don't like the rules I'll just wait for Orks. And that cycle will continue until the game pulls me back in.

Sell my miniatures? Now that's crazy talk!
Started gaming in '87 ( RPGs, Board Games, Miniatures) and I've never sold a game.

I'm the same. Well, sort of. All of my stuff from pre-3rd edition is gone, through cannibalising for bits for new stuff and just plain losing them through moving a lot. But when I 'leave' a game, I don't sell anything, because chances are, I'll come back to it. I left wargaming entirely for 4-5 years, then came back to 40k. While I didn't pick my old Salamanders back up, they're still sitting there in their tackle box just how I left them. The only stuff I've been getting rid of are failed attempts at starting armies way back then - bits of Imperial Guard and Eldar that never went anywhere and never will.
When I start a new game, like I did with Infinity, I don't get rid of my old stuff. i don't see the point. It's mine, I spent time building and painting it, and I might just want to play it again. Not all of us have an 'us and them' mentality when it comes to playing different games.
If I ever needed to consider selling my old stuff to fund a new game... well, I'd take a long, hard look at my finances and if I should even be starting a new game in the first place.

OP your flavour of the month complaint is imo invalid atm. The things I really hate GW for is using paid rules to sell models and making 40k obviously fantasish, prices are bad too but I'm buying so little new and so much used that I don't really care. Have to say they seem to improve on some things lately like balance or the codex release pace, it's not all gloom and doom.
