Anyone who has read 'Space Marine' the novel by Ian Watson might remember this obscure alien species, so obscure we don't even find out what they're called, just that the body of one was discovered in the bowels of a Tyranid bio-ship and from that we are led to believe by the author that they too were a race from beyond the galaxy.

If I remember they were encased in armour like the space marines themselves but of an obvious alien design and that was impervious the acids of the digestive pool they find it in. One of the marines rips the alien helmet off to reveal a turtle like headed alien, though long desiccated by time. They also found a bolter like weapon with the body.

For some reason the brief mention of them has stayed with me since I read the book, and that was about 20 years ago! Were they really a race from another galaxy? The last race to be consumed by the hive fleet in their own galaxy before they moved on to ours? I've always found this thought to be fascinating!
