Subject: Zoe Quinn and the five guys; corruption in video game journalism
Slate readers are over, declining—a dead demographic.
Why on Earth would I start a column with this thesis? There is no faster way to alienate my audience—that is, the people who pay my bills. And yet, this is exactly what writers at not one but half a dozen online gaming publications did to their audiences last week, and it points to a significant shift in the business of gaming. Gamers are not over, but gaming journalism is.
I'm more than a little biased, but....
Seriously, how can Game Journalists NOT see this?
Edit: ^ Sorry, I could have seen that as all the different sites lashing out at gamers, but when ALL of them are going on about Misogyny and "the Death of the Gamer", I have to call bs. I know for a fact (Well, 95% certain) that there are journalists just trying to do their jobs and report on things, but when the sites all churn out the same exact story within a week, I find this incredibly hard to believe.

See, I prefer the typical reviews like what IGN does (If it did them properly). I like having someone whom I can take a review from and go into it; I never would have watched FLCL, Gurren Lagann, or Kill La Kill if it hadn't been for GRArkada, for instance (He's a reviewer of Anime on Youtube).

Respectfully disagree, it's just that the current rating system is so bugged up the butt it isn't funny; a 5 should be an Average game, not an 8....
That's why I like Angry Joe (Despite how little I agree with him on most games) and GRArkada; both use a rating system, but both still say if they recommend or not.
GRArkada gave Gurenn Lagann a 8.74 out of 10, with "A recommendation to buy the gak out of it".
(He does swear a bit)

I don't think it's possible to NOT like GL, honestly. I haven't met anyone who does..... or did for a very long time..... *Lowers crowbar*
But I'm just saying, there is a market for the type of reviews and just general Journalism that these guys offer, but they are throwing it all to the wayside; TotalBiscuit does nothing that most editorials do, Jim Sterling (Not sure he counts since he actually works for them) very much so sparks debate by taking a side, ProJared/Angry Joe/others actually review games, PDP is just plain old "Fun" (Personally I can't stand the channel)....
You could honestly rope them all up and make a pretty kick ass site if they didn't want to miss out on YT Money.

About that...have Publishers and Developers started using quotes from independent and amateur youtube reviewers and commentators like TotalBiscuit on their boxes and to advertise, rather than the traditional gaming sites like Kotaku and IGN? I imagine that would be quite a snub.
I hope not; We need Game devs to have both sides. While TotalBiscuit is one of the more professional ones (that I've seen) almost all Youtube Gamers are a little too "Brodudeski" in my opinion. Not that there is anything wrong with that, just that we need them to have people whose job it is to analyze games and are scrutinized by the masses, and their livelyhood is based around reviewing games. Kind of like......
Well gak....

I find it funny that Jim Sterling is siding with the Journalists when he made this video a month ago (And this thing happened two-three weeks ago, so it's immediately after it XD)
As always with Jimquisition, some very NSFW language.

If writing reviews is hard (As Objective Game Reviews states), why does every Tom, Dick, and Sally try to do it? Most only stop because of lack of views/exposure, not because it's hard....
Also, stopped reading at Vox's "Anti-Feminism" and
Needless to say, much of the criticism of Quinn was horrifyingly gendered, directed not just at her personal decisions (which would have been bad enough) but also at her identity specifically as a woman within the gaming community.
Seriously?

Watching this I've begun to realize just how much of a negative influence Disney movies have had on my life. They've planted unrealistic notions in my head, which I'm going to go ahead and blame for the entirety of my first marriage. Thanks a lot, Disney.
Even if this was posted in jest, benefit of the doubt, in comedy timing is everything.....
This was posted two hours ago, btw.

Did the companies that supported the IGF (And have withdrawn support of it) (AKA: Valve, Digipen, Microsoft, Sony) all know about it? And if they did, did they have their hand the in cookie jar? Basically, did they pull funding to distance themselves from a PR standpoint, or from a "Oh poop let's get away from them or we get lumped in with the rest of our conspirators"?
Valve I would like to believe wouldn't do that, but they are a business and see people as wads of cash. Microsoft and Sony I don't doubt for a second, though Digipen troubles me; Dan put out a vid saying he hated GamerGate, so is that his opinion, or is that Digipen saying "Hey, you're the best thing we have to PR, say something"?
Or is this all a dream? Or is Anita Dreaming, and we're all part of it?

Mechanical Crow wrote: Couldn't tell you its the same people reporting, but they do articles on cosplayers and the like.
Cosplay and booth babes are pretty different though. Some cosplay can be pretty sexualized, but it is still about a fan putting work into his or her passion, which is pretty different from someone being paid to wear a costume in order to promote some product.
Of course, if the article focus only on the most sexy cosplay, it is still a bit sad…
Automatically Appended Next Post: What is the problem with Double Fine getting funds? They made pretty awesome games. I admit I am too lazy to check the context .
Several things.
1) They had a kickstarter for Double Fine Adventure, where they raised an ungodly amount of money ($3,336,371 pledged of $400,000 goal). The 400,000 was supposed to make the game, with all extra money going to make it better. Fair enough.
2) They ended up pushing the release date back, and eventually had to release half of the game due to "Misappropriated Funds". Fair enough; Game Devs typically aren't good with money when it comes to making games.
3) They get a loan from IGF to make more games. Fair enough.
4) No word of #2 of DFA as of yet.
5) IGF has racketeering leveled against it.
6) HOW DO WE KNOW THOSE "MISAPPROPRIATED FUNDS" DIDN'T LINE SOMEONES POCKET?!?
FETH. JUST prepurchased Costume Quest 2 yesterday....

I asked him if the Documentary was available because he defended himself with "We put all the money in the game, made a documentary about it, clearest development ever", and he said I could get it off the official website.
I go and check, $10 for just the documentary.

Oh. That is less than stellar, sure.
Is it linked to corruption in video game journalism?
Only if you look at points 3-6.

Actually, I did not understood what 5 meant. Also, if that money ended up on someone's pocket, would it not be someone from Double Fine rather than a journalist?
Who knows; it might have been pocketted by DF. It might have gone to a journalist. It might have been given to someone's mum. He's adamant that it went into the game, and until proof/significant reason to doubt him is present just gonna have to live with that.
Point Five is fully explained by Point 3.
