A BW is better than a LR because it's cheaper (costs half the points) and has better sinergy with orks style of playing than the LR has with SM one. The BW is a transport, orks have just the BW or the trukk as available options, no deepstriking units and lots of units that need a vehicle to get into combat, while SM have other transports that serve their purpose better than the LR.

SM have several units that shoot better than a LR, flyers and drop pods as more efficient transports, other than deepstriking units. Vanilla marines can also field free transports.

That's why BW in orks lists can be useful even in semi-competitive lists while the LR can be played only in friendly games.

point for point they are about equally trash. The difference is that SMs have other options to pull from. We have Trukkz, Gun Wagons (FW and no model atm) and Battlewagons. So its good because we NEED it. But even though it synergizes well (which it doesnt) its still not good. Also the only reason you would say it synergizes with Orks is because its a 20 model transport. If it was only a 10 model transport it wouldn't be fielded nearly as often.

I still think making it not an OT vehicle but keeping the assault special rule goes a bit towards fixing some of the durability issues it has. And the other being the Weapons....well if they were free nobody would complain about 4 big shootas/Rokkitz. I would still say pay for the Kannon on top but since its a BS2 weapon I would make it a 3 shot Kannon for 15pts.

I would do a few things;

1. Make deff rollas usable/useful again
2. BW gets 4 big shootas for free, can upgrade to rokkits for +5 points per rokkits
3. Ard case is +1 to side and rear armour
4. Grot gunners for +1 BS
5. More units able to take it as a dedicated transport
6. Warboss can take BWs as a personal dedicated transport (along with whoever the boss is attached to)
7. General points reduction

:EDIT:

I would just like to add that I have not played for a few years and have been out of the loop until recently. My observations are based solely on the contents of this thread and my old memories of running orks 5th ed.

Rokkits are the same point cost as big shootas these days, so the shootas to rokkits upgrade should be free. Otherwise it seems fine.

40k drinking game: take a shot everytime a book references Skitarii using transports.

The possible upgrade which gives grot gunners is very cool IMHO, I guess it should cost around 10 points.

The possibility of getting a BW as a dedicated transport for units of boyz joined by the warboss or units of specialists like tankbustas is something that I always desired too.

I just like the idea of warbosses, big Meks and nobs/meganobs all having their own personal battlewagons. I mean which self respecting warbosses wouldn't want his own gigantic personal war chariot, which he might allow his killiest boyz to ride in?

:EDIT:
Removed loads of stuff that I added that was completely irrelevant, I thought this was a Codex: Orks fix/rewrite thread for a minute.
