I remember going to the GW at Merry Hill and getting Imperial Space Marines, a Land Raider and some Devastators... good times.

And still had enough left over for a bag of chips and the bus fare home?

This thread is one of the best threads ever. I love seeing people's early minis (apart from when they're so bad they make my eyes bleed! Hehe)
This is not my first - I don't remember my first, nor do I have a picture of it, but this is from my first army. World Eaters in about 2005.
I think the thing that confuses me the most about my early painting is that I just left some bits entirely unpainted - eg the trim on this berzerker's legs - I just didn't bother with it! It's also heinous that most were so bad, yet I managed to paint a daemon prince to a high standard, with blending and highlights and all sorts, in the same period. Maybe I was just rushing my troops.
I suspect the fact that I lost so many games at the time was due to other gamers' determination not to lose to such a badly painted force. DESTROY THE BLOB MARINES!

RTB001 plastic space marines were my first 40k models, followed by a couple of metals - I no longer have the ACTUAL first 40k models I bought, but these ARE the same vintage.
This is two of the RTB001s and one of the old metal marines.

One of the first two minis I had was the one in the middle here, as well as another that had some kind of force ax. Terrible minis lol. Then I got a Crusader robot. Then I got some of the plastic beakie marines.

But it wasn't 40k that got me into gaming really, it was Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine (v1). Those games were the games I was waiting my whole life for and didn't realize it. I would say the original metal Reaver titan was my first love as far as minis go and is still one of my favorite minis of all time.

But 40k really didn't kick off for me until 2nd Edition came out. That is when things really went crazy for me.

My very first models were these Necrons:

And yes, I used to think whatever was going on there with the lord counted as being "based".

The models in question have since been re-painted and I'm in the process of slowly re-basing my army (32mm looks so much better for Necron models)...I should get some new pictures to do a comparison sometime.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I have just discovered this too. Luckily, Necron feet are small and easily to prise from their bases!
