When Alan was originally asked about this, way back when 8ed had been announced but not released, his opinion was that Horus Heresy was always an expansion to mainstream 40k, implying that the plan would be to do as they had done before and update.

After his passing, there was, for a while, the official line that HH wouldn’t be updated ‘for the time being’ (presumably as FW we’re catching up and restructuring after the loss).

More recently, the current line is that they’re sticking with 7ed (sometimes qualified with ‘until all the Legions/armies are out’ and sometimes not).

Of course, everything should be taken with a pinch of salt as marketing is a thing - even if they were planning to swap to 8ed, they’d keep pushing 7ed right up to that announcement.

Why do units for 1 game/system need to be compatible and used in another separate game/system?

You are playing same rules as game you are already playing, wanna have a game with your buddy with his army from 40k? No problem, it's compatible..wanna play some 'unification wars xeno game' vs orks, eldar etc.. no problem, you play it vs your buddy. Can't do that any more.

Anyone interested from 40k, can much more easily switch to it if they are interested. As we saw when those boxes were released.

Well, no actually, you can still do that. Easily. The models are still there, the rules still exist, most folk will still have them unless they're one of those crackpots that just chucks the whole previous edition/s in the bin as soon as a new one rolls around. Many of those 40K players who prefer 8th as a system just don't want to.

That's unfortunate for anyone who's stuck with nobody else to play but it's not a problem with 30K, it's a problem with some folk being too selfish to put a tiny smidge of effort in for the sake of a gaming buddy.

Switching back and forth from similiar gaming systems is annoying and can mess with ones head.
I am never going back to 7th and I nly have a small HH force that is waiting for it to convert to 8th, like Alan Bligh Intended

When did Bligh intend to convert the game to 8th? In all honesty it's a shame that never happened.

He barely had time to even have heard of whole 8th ed before dying or even try it properly...

Bligh’s comment was pretty general - no one at FW had seen 8th at the time. He may have assumed that the edition change could be handled the usual way, with just an errata rather than a full rewrite.

The current team has said that they foresee difficulties achieving the level of detail the legions currently have in 8th, and that they’ll think about it again once every army has rules out (after the next black book and a final set of red books).

By then, there’ll be fewer of the old, small-scale marines being used in 40k so I’m not sure there will be as much interest in model compatibility between the two systems.

The more i think about it playing the current Horus Heresy rules the more i would like some kind of new 7.5 rules. Some union of best elements from 7 and 8 editions. Perhaps similiar to Necromunda activation system.

Horus Heresy if its going to change and they will make a decision to make a new ruleset it needs to be better and more detailed than 8 edition.
