Warhammer meme reddit has a field day with all that stuff, they're memeing themselves into believing that AoO book 5 is a bait-and-switch and will introduce the Hrud as 'Space Skaven' instead of the Lion ''I want to believe'' on warp-crack

For the record, i'm all for the Hrud, but Space Skaven is a bit unimaginative, weird Morlock-like beings that come from the future and go backwards through time are a more interesting take on them than ratmen-men.

Once upon a time, someone at the studio did up some old metal skaven (~3rd edition fantasy models- I still have the models used as the starting point) with RT-era guard lasguns, A few people decided that meant GW had planned to do Space Skaven. When hrud illustrations first appeared (mysterious cloaked figures) someone did 1+2 =5 and an early internet meme of skaven=hrud was born.

For whatever fething reason, that's stuck hard in some people's heads.

Apparently 'Space Ratmen' was a concept that got on the shortlist for 'New Alien Race' back when they prepared what eventually became Tau + Kroot, including some preliminary concept art and mockup sculpts, so the concept was taken quite seriously for some time. Of course, by that time the 'classic' pic with Kroot, Donorian Clawed Fiend, Necron, Tarellian Dogsoldier and hooded Hrud w/ ratty tail was about five years old already.

At one point, Jes Goodwin tinkered with some 40k-ified Skaven concept art :

...how is "Space Skaven" as a core concept any more "unimaginative" than, say:
- Humans in Space
- Evil Humans in Space
- Knights with Guns in Space
- Evil Knights with Guns in Space
- Nuns with Guns in Space
- High Elves in Space
- Dark Elves in Space

The blade looks more Khorne to me. It's not scrappy or salvaged, the rough edge is intentional, and the closest visual matches are Khorne daemons and certain Bloodbound.

Hail Mary, I'll guess it's a Khorngor/dog-like beastman for the Khorne Warcry warband

So the WarCom blurb hints at space skaven huh. Probably pairing off vs Arbites on Kill Team huh.

Without the blurb my guess would have been the Khorne/Vampirinc team for Warcry.

I'm wondering if that rumour engine could be kroot. 4 fingers with sharp claw-like nails, the wrappings, and crude looking weapons and armour are all element that they have too, especially with the Farstalker Kindband.

My guess for the latest RE is Soulblight Gravelords.

The scale looks too big to be skaven (level of detail on the leather and claws) and the claws match very closely to those that you see on the Vargskyr and Radukar the Beast.

The armor is too clean to be Flesh Eater Courts (who don't really wear armor) or Skaven, but slightly corroded blades is a theme we see a lot of in Soulblight Gravelords.

Open hand with bladed bracer is certainly in keeping with a lot of other BB models and I definitely think it’s vampiric.

Vampire Blood Bowl team would be so cool and I really got a vamp vibe from the rumour pic more than anything else for some reason.

Just wanted to show the similarity to an old BB Vampire player, look at the blade design and how it leaves the hand free.

Looks like it could well be a modernisation of this concept. The old sculpt has gloves on, which would be the biggest difference.

It looks very much like an updated version of Gor-Rok's club:

And one of the Kroxigors had one in this style:

I know there's a ball club on old Kroxigors.

I urge you to consider the weak attachment point and thin shaft that definitely isn't Kroxigor fist scale.

Dunno. It could be, but its a more delicate-looking version of the melee weapon on the alt-build of the new skink cavalry (their lances have the 'ball' built into the frame- no spacer and more surface area keeping the orb in place).
There's little to determine a scale, and if the rider's lances are any indication, the function of the item may not be obvious, even with the spikes on the orb.

I see what you mean. By the scratches on the shaft, it seems smaller than the Kroxigor club. Skink size seems about right - i think it's too much like the other clubs to be something caster-related, but it could be some as-of-yet unknown old one techno-magic doodad. Or a club, who knows. Definitely lizardmen ofc.
