These titles are pretty niche here, though. I only mentioned the ones I know are really popular. Here in Poland t9A and ASOIAF seem to have more players (competitively, idk what people play at homes) than Age of Sigmar.

Finished at $75K, excited to see this do so well!!

Physical books are slated for delivery in October, so there's a bit of a wait now. But with their awesome art style, and additional artwork they'll commission unlocked at the very end, it should be worth it

I'm going to be trying it out this friday. Pretty excited, it really does seem like its the kind of RnF I like. I liked The Old World, but I don't like having to buy so many models to get a game in

I introduced my 9 year old son to the game with the pre-release rules, which were still in development but pretty much the full game. He had a bunch of fun, even though it was hard keeping his attention for a full game.

We used my Lego armies that I have been collecting for either this or Kings of War. I don't know if I would be able to keep his attention with Kings of War having more stats. He liked the speed of combat resolution, and how units are relatively similar within their unit "type", but with the strengths and weaknesses making them unique to their army list. It made it easy for him to remember that most units threw 10 dice when fighting unless they had a hero embedded, or were a ranged unit (which use half).

Those look great! Glad to hear the game was able to keep the interest of a young lad!

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

Thanks! If I remember correctly, this was a 2,000 point game.

For the sake of conversation, the green bases they are on are the minimum size for Wide infantry units, with flat tiles at the back for dry erase markers for tracking Doom. I have been working on several other units to represent monsters with/without heroes riding them, as well as artillery. All with the requirement that they must all be made from Lego (or competitors).

My son is geeked about Lego, so why not funnel that addiction into another!

Hobgoblin also scored Best Miniatures Rules award at UK Games Expo 2024

After a few video battle reports I remain skeptical, the rules look slick but list building is... aggressively casual, and I fear the often repeated praise of "if something isn't working just stat it differently next game" is secretly a huge cop-out. Everything should be working, if it's not working it's not priced correctly. Well, we'll know when rulebooks actually get into the wild if all lists converge on some minimal number of builds.

Personally, I like the level of "aggressively casual" unit building in the game that I have experienced so far, and I can't imagine the final rulebook is a whole lot different than the latter-stage development playtest rules, mechanically. There's probably going to be some builds that are going to see "that guy" want to spam as "must have" units, but honestly, unless you are playing in tournaments, you absolutely know who in your group is going to be that type of player, because you have dealt with them in other games. The "build it differently next time" phrase gives me an interesting feeling to have a game where basically every player is a development play tester for the army they have designed, right from the get-go.

It's nice to see a larger-scale game (i.e. not skirmish) that is built around an army-builder at its core, rather than having it be an extra feature added on later (like the games from One Page Rules). I don't think it's ever possible to have a purely mechanical army builder like the one in Hobgoblin that is 100% balanced, compared to units being "balanced by feel" through extended playtesting like in most normal games.

So far Hobgoblin is a really fun game, although I have only played it at a simplistic level in demo games with common-feeling units. Soon I want to get into more esoteric things, like mounting my General on a Monster (or basically having a literal monster as my General), or flying infantry or cavalry units.

Another interesting thing I want to try is to take a crack at the extremes the game allows in basing and mechanics. Like taking a Light Infantry unit as a base, giving it Wizard, then paying extra to make it a Narrow Unit. Then mount the wizard model by themselves, or maybe with an attending model or two, on a minimum-size narrow base. More expensive, but gives you an agile lone hero with lots of hit points like in Kings of War, rather than a character leading a cheaper but larger and more cumbersome unit like in Warhammer.

Same thing, but start with a cavalry unit, if you want to represent the hero on a mount by themselves.
