New to fantasy and need help fleshing out a list. I know that I will need something to give me enough points for my core choices just do not want to buy something until I know what to use. This is a list of what I currently have available none of it is assembled so models can be built accordingly.

Volkar and Altar
Engineer
State Troops x20
Greatswords x10
Pistolliers/Outriders x5
Demi Gryph Knights x3
Hellblaster

I know that the Volkar and Altar will be useful in larger games but I can build the models in there and find bases to use them as stand ins for a wizard or warrior priest. I really like the idea of the Pistoliers and would prefer them over the Outriders unless the Outriders are significantly stronger.

Using what I have and adding in some other core choices what would you veteran WHFB players recommend?

Well luckily for us Empire players our core state troops are aplenty and come in many flavors, but my favorite is halberds, S4 6pts a pop these guys are sugar coated murder in units of 50 (hoard formation).

For your 750 game start with taking 20 halberds with a warrior priest in them as your base. Then the demis will be your hammer as they are very strong. Then you can throw in the greatswords as a flanking unit.

As for what to get:
Halberdsx3 boxes minimum add more depending on army theme.
Demisx1 box should cut it.
I recommend 2 great cannons for all purpose killing machines.
Wizard lords are useful, bathazar gelt is the only named lord I fully recommend.
Any of the magic wagons are good for infantry hoards.

If you want to make a list at about 2000-2500 for the future you can, we can then give advice or make comments on where to spend your hard earned cash.

So should I add more Statetroops right now? According to my list I need 187 points in core choice for a 750 pt army.

20 Statetroops with a standard, musician and champion only comes in at 150. Should I bump them up to 30 then?

Here is what I have come up with so far. Any ideas as to how to finish this list up? I know I need more points in core at this point level so any suggestions as to what to add there? What I have listed so far are things I currently own. I do not own anything else from the core section so I am open to purchase whatever option you think should fill it. If there are things in other categories you think would be better choices at this level let me know!

20 halberds won't last too long in combat. I would bump that up to 30 at least

This is a good list at 750, though you definitely want more state troops ASAP.

If you like state troops a lot you will want to pick up the comet wagon for the +1 to hit bubble, and lastly a steam tank will do you wonders.

I would drop the Greatswords fer some more halberds. I love Greatswords and they work phenomenally in higher point lists with the right hero and full command, however, IMO, they just don't have a place in anything lower than a 1.5 or 2k list. That being said, they are some of the coolest looking units the emp has.
