Hey everyone,

Getting back into the hobby after a LONG time. I used to play the 2e and 3e to give you an idea how long ago it has been. Also, was a young kid then (8 in 1995) and mainly the "cool factor" kept me interested but I never really learned the rules properly...my cousin was good to tell me what I could or could not do lol. So I never really got into the complexities of the game too much mainly due to my age and lack of people to help me learn, but I always enjoyed painting. I came back to painting a very little amount around 2002 but that was short lived and I only painted a couple of miniatures then. Something gave me the urge to look up some local stores to get some new supplies, so I went and purchased some paints and brushes since all my old stuff were in terrible condition. I still have a lot of unpainted models so I didnt bother with any of that...yet. I mainly had space marines (ultramarines and my bro had blood angels) but also have a handful of orks and eldar too. I doubt I have enough to put a large sized army together currently but maybe with some work I could field something worth while.

A couple questions:

1. Which are the preferred armies these days? Are space marines still a good faction or should I try something new like Tau? Or both?!
1a. If space marines are still good, what is a decent army consist of? Maybe I have most of it already without knowing.
2. Does it make any sense to buy and learn 6e rules before going to buy the newest 7e? I can get an unopened box set of dark vengeance for 60$ and was considering getting that to reacquaint myself with the game while not breaking the bank...and get a bunch of new models and game supplies too.
3. Are the rules overly complex? I remember the rules being fairly complex before... but I was only around 10 years old then so I hope I pick it up fairly easily now.
4. Why are all the paints renamed?? Seems like that was mostly pointless and more confusing now.

Im sure I will have more questions to come but those stood out to me. Im trying to find more locals currently to help me as well. Anyone have any noob advice for me? Any beginner "musts" or "dont do's"? Anything will help and be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to getting some good feedback

Thanks everyone!

Waiting at the Dark Tower steps..

Welcome to Dakka Dakka!

1) Everyone loves space marines! But I collect my fav chapter and orks. Playing two races keeps it interesting and can always switch it up with your friends (but it is pricey)

2) More people will eventually switch over to 7th so I recommend going with the new codex so far good reviews except for force organisation chart...

3) Rules are a little complex but after some games you will get the hang of it.

4) Yes its made to confuse people, but they are just paints.

Enjoy your stay!

Hello, and welcome to Dakka! Regarding the paints GW has a PDF chart that shows which of the new paints is similar to an old one to make it easier for you. As for preferred armies you can basically use any force you like especially if you use the unbound rules.

Welcome to Dakka! Enjoy your stay.

I'm actually going to say go for Dark Vengeance if you can get it cheap. The core rules between 6th and 7th have probably changed far less than the rules between 1995 and 6th ed, so movement, shooting, assault ect are all pretty much identical. The big changes with 7th are in army building, and the introduction of a psychic phase; very little else has changed. You also get a load of minis that are really great quality for painting practice and display if nothing else, or you can sell them off and get most of your money back.

As for choosing an army, just pick whichever one you like the most, for whatever reason. No point playing an army you won't enjoy as much as another.

Hi,
